Three healthier ego defense mechanisms after loss are:
🔥Sublimation – Channeling grief into something meaningful or productive.
A person may write, pray, create art, start a support group, exercise, or help others as a way of transforming pain into purpose.
🔥Humor – Using appropriate humor to ease emotional heaviness without denying the loss.
Laughing at warm memories or finding light moments during grief can reduce emotional tension and help people cope.
🔥Suppression – Consciously choosing to temporarily set aside painful emotions in order to function. Unlike denial, the person is aware of the grief but decides, “I will deal with this later when I am emotionally ready.”
Healthy defenses do not ignore pain completely; they help a person process grief in safer and more constructive ways.
