Lenacapavir is a new type of HIV medicine mainly designed for HIV prevention.

It is used as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), meaning it helps protect people who are HIV-negative but at risk of getting the virus.

Instead of taking pills every day, this medicine can be given as an injection under the skin only twice a year.

This twice-yearly dosing is one of the biggest breakthroughs.

Many people struggle to remember daily HIV prevention pills or may avoid them because of stigma.

A medicine that works for six months after one injection could make prevention easier for millions of people.

Lenacapavir works in a completely new way.

It belongs to a class of medicines called capsid inhibitors, which block the protective shell that surrounds the HIV virus.

When this shell is disrupted, the virus cannot properly reproduce inside human cells.

However, there are important things the public should know.

1. lenacapavir does not cure HIV. It is meant to prevent infection in people who do not already have the virus.

2. people who already have HIV will still need combination antiretroviral therapy because treating HIV requires more than one medicine targeting different stages of the virus.

3. access may be a challenge. Early prices in some countries were very high, although global health groups are working to make cheaper versions available in low- and middle-income countries where HIV rates are highest.
