One of the main causes of drug and alcohol addiction among urban youth in developing countries is the lack of economic opportunities and social support.
According to a report by the UN-Habitat, urban youth in developing countries face high levels of unemployment, poverty, inequality, and exclusion, which make them vulnerable to substance use as a coping mechanism or a source of income.
Moreover, urban youth often live in overcrowded and unsafe environments, where they are exposed to violence, crime, and social unrest, which can trigger or worsen mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
These mental health problems can in turn increase the risk of developing or maintaining a substance use disorder, creating a vicious cycle of addiction and mental illness.
Therefore, addressing the root causes of drug and alcohol addiction among urban youth in developing countries requires not only providing effective treatment and rehabilitation services, but also improving their living conditions, education, employment, and participation in society.
