In simple terms, here is what causes the protective layer to wear down and expose the sensitive part of your tooth:
.Brushing too hard: Scrubbing back and forth like crazy can sand down your gums and tooth enamel over time.
.Acidic food/drink: Things like soda, sour candy, or too much citrus can slowly "dissolve" the enamel.
.Clenching or grinding: Rubbing your teeth together in your sleep puts pressure on them and wears them down.
.Gum disease: If your gums are unhealthy, they can pull back (recede), exposing the roots of the teeth which don't have a thick enamel layer.
.Cavities: A hole in the tooth goes right through the armor and hits the nerve.
