Cost implications of periods on women

Yesterday, I started a conversation on Facebook prompting my female friends/followers to talk about their period costs.
The goal was to shed some light on how costly it is to obtain period products and care. I am glad that the conversation was enlightening for many, including men,- who seemed very sympathetic and surprised by the situation.

Here's a list of some cost implications during the period/bleeding phase of menstruation:
🔶 On average, 2 packs of sanitary pads (.250 ) and or 2 packs of tampons (.350) per phase.
🔷 Flushable sanitary wipes (@200)
🔶 Lots of toilet paper
🔷 Iron supplements (pills for some)
🔶 Iron rich foods eg liver and spinach
🔷 Painkillers
🔶 Herbal teas for the mood imbalances
🔷 Sometimes women are forced to purchase extra buckets of water.
‼️ The list is endless. Let me know what I left out.

And this is just for one phase.
Each phase of menstruation presents with itself different issues. Both good and hard.
Women deserve free or at least standardized menstrual products and care. Work places MUST be mindful of menstruation hardships, to grant women the support they need. Time off, rest and grace.

Health facilities offering GBV services

Do you know where to go when in need of PEP or the r**e kit or/and other GBV services?

Take note of the health facilities that offer GBV services, as it will save you time, money and inconveniences. Especially with the P3 forms.

Being nice is worthless..

Here's the thing, being nice is worthless if you are just going to feel resentful about it in the end..; you might as well be outspoken and state your needs from the onset!

As women, we speak up! We use our voices for change. There is no need to burst in anger from all the fury we bury inside ourselves! We speak! even when no one pays attention! They will. Eventually. And if they don't, we do! We pay attention.

I have observed a behaviour that I find quite risky to the future of our integrity and principles as a community.
Men rarely hold fellow men accountable unless it's on an issue that directly affects them.
As a matter of fact, supporting 'bad' behaviour is considered cool. (Bad is in quotes because I realize we have greyed our black and white so much so that what's right or wrong has become relative)
As we reflect on this, as a man, how easy is it for you to call out your friend for catcalling a woman or for bragging about sexually harassing a lady? Whenever the school holidays approach, I see grown men engage in conversations with excitement about how they can't wait for the young tender girls to come home. Visualizing the bodies of teenagers (13-17 yrs) is disgusting. But I rarely see men caution fellow men on such behaviour. Why do we encourage pe******ia?
Did you know that a major reason why men shy from reporting sexual assault cases is because fellow men call them weak? You jump to ask your friend who's hurting and feeling violated 'was she pretty? Maan you are lucky! Can she come and r**e me too?"
We say men support fellow men but do they really genuinely do that? Do men encourage one another to grow in the right direction? Can you call out your fellow men for making inappropriate comments or are you afraid of looking weak?

As a woman, a human rights activist and a gender equality champion, I get very happy when I see men match with us to the streets to speak against injustices on women, or when men support equality campaigns. But that's a step ahead of ourselves. Let's take a few strides back and prevent these injustices by discouraging hurtful misogynistic conversations.

Let's mend the cracks! Building a new wall is costly!!

If men held fellow men accountable, violence against women would be prevented by far! Any thoughts?

Teenage mothers
part of today was spent with teen mothers in Kajiado central, engaging in conversations and education on and child care, family planning, based violence, relationships, and awareness, and personal growth.

Taking every opportunity to amplify the conversation.

There still exists a gap in capacity building and empowerment of young people towards making healthy choices. The knowledge gap on sexual reproductive health and rights is wide, coupled up with a weak redress system for SRHR injustices. and must prioritize adolescent sexual reproductive health and right issues.

Conversations that seek to empower refugee men and women, while creating a safe space to share on their lived experiences.
and for all means that policies, programs and social systems do not discriminate against the vulnerable groups, including refugees.

We cannot design programs to empower refugees and displaced persons without bringing them on board! Only they can tell where it pinches. Only they know what help they need! If we truly seek to serve vulnerable communities, we must give them what they need, not what we think they should have.

There was a certain Facebook post on a man who had been cheated on by the wife. The man was very angry at his lover's partner, well, that's understandable. The comments on the post are what caught the eye.

Please, we cannot justify violence, murder or even abuse! We cannot! Nothing under the sun should justify hurting a fellow human being. Be it a man or a woman.

We cannot tell women to "FIX" themselves in order to avoid violence against them!

We cannot preach to men that reporting injustices perpetuated against them is a sign of weakness, because it is not! Please report!

We cannot treat women as the weaker, lowly less deserving gender! We cannot! We cannot do this to men either!

The fight against gender based violence is not war waged on men! It is advocacy against injustices perpetrated on the basis of gender. Whether to a man or a woman!

Indulge in some of the comments below!
