It is with deep sorrow that I acknowledge the tragic incident that occurred in Chaka, Nyeri Town, where a young man lost his life to su***de. Reports indicate that during his final moments, he was seen on a building’s sixth floor by bystanders who tragically misunderstood his distress as attention-seeking. Instead of receiving the urgent help he needed, he was mocked and dared to jump. Moments later, he fell to his death.
First and foremost, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends. No words can adequately express the pain of such a loss, and we stand with you in this dark hour.
This incident highlights a critical need for community awareness and education on mental health and su***de prevention. Mental distress is not a spectacle it is a serious cry for help. As a society, we must learn to recognize the signs of emotional crisis and respond with empathy, not judgment.
As a Clinical Psychologist and the incoming Chairperson of the Kenya Counsellors and Psychologists Association (KCPA), Nyeri County Chapter, I commit to taking immediate steps to address these gaps. We will organize a community mental health awareness campaign, focusing on su***de prevention, empathy, and appropriate intervention strategies. Additionally, we will coordinate a debriefing and support session for the affected family, offering psychological first aid and grief support.
Let this tragic event be a turning point for us all to choose compassion over mockery, and action over indifference.
