Message of Condolence

The Nursing Union mourns the tragic loss of Nurse Joseph Simiyu, who passed away following an accident at Kariandusi.

Nairobi County has lost a champion of healthcare and a dedicated voice for nurses' rights.

To our colleagues at Chandaria Health Centre and Joseph's family, we stand with you in this dark hour. Joseph's passion for health and wellness was an inspiration to us all.

Rest well, Joseph. Your contribution to the fraternity will never be forgotten.

Kilifi County Nurses and Midwives have begun their Strike Notice over the following unmet demands by the Employer:-

a) Violation of Return-to-Work Formulas (RTWFs)- The Respondent has blatantly breached the legally binding Return-to-Work Formulas dated 15th July 2025 and 20th August 2025, undermining the good faith necessary for industrial harmony.

b) Failure to Promote and Upgrade Eligible Members - There is a persistent failure by the employer to effect the promotion and/or upgrading of eligible members, stagnating their career progression despite them meeting all requisite criteria.

c) Non-Payment of Salary Arrears - The employer continues to refuse the settlement of longstanding January/February salary arrears for the 2020/2021 period, directly violating the employees' right to fair remuneration.

d) Failure to pay the Enhanced Risk Allowance - The Respondent has refused to implement the agreed-upon increase of the Risk Allowance to Kshs. 5,000, leaving members exposed without adequate compensatory recognition for their hazardous working conditions.

e) Failure to Establish Monitoring Mechanisms - Contrary to previous agreements, the employer has failed to form a joint committee dedicated to the monitoring and evaluation of the signed RTWFs, leading to a total lack of accountability.

f) Discriminatory Employment Terms (Locum/Casual Nurses) - The Union notes with concern the refusal to absorb locum and casual nurses into permanent and pensionable terms, perpetuating job insecurity and unequal treatment within the workforce.

g) Unfair Labour Practices - The cumulative actions and omissions of the Respondent constitute gross unfair labour practices, violating Article 41 of the Constitution and the Employment Act of Kenya.

To the Employer, Please be advised that the Union stands in full, unwavering support of its members' strike action. This industrial action is a direct consequence of the employer's systemic failures and bad faith negotiations.

The Union hereby declares that the strike shall continue unabated up and until every issue raised above has been fully addressed, resolved, and implemented to the satisfaction of the membership.

While we mourn the loss of life, we must address the systemic failures that make such tragedies inevitable.

The tragic maternal death at Kenyenya Sub-County Hospital was a failure of the system, not the nurse on duty. The facts are outlined in the letter attached below.

As a Union representing all Nurses and Midwives across the Country, we demand an independent investigation into hospital management and immediate staffing reforms.

Safety for patients requires safe working conditions for nurses and midwives. 🩺

KNUNM Secures Formal Recognition with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH)

KISUMU, KENYA - Today marks a historic milestone for healthcare labor relations in the region. The Union is proud to announce the official signing of a Recognition Agreement (RA) with the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).

This formal agreement grants the Union the legal mandate and full recognition required to transact official business, negotiate terms, and advocate for the rights and welfare of our members directly with the JOOTRH management.

We are now the officially recognized representative body for nurses and midwives at the facility. This establishes a formal framework for addressing labor issues, grievances, and collective bargaining .

The Union extends its sincere appreciation to the Leadership and Management of JOOTRH led by their CEO Dr. Joshua Clinton Okise (a Level 6 facility) for their cooperation and for facilitating a smooth, professional process. Their commitment to formalizing this relationship reflects a shared dedication to quality healthcare and fair labor practices.

The signing ceremony was led by the General Secretary, who was accompanied by Deputy National Organizing Secretary Mr. Stephen Ruteere, National Deputy Trustee Charles Alsoreg, and JOOTRH Chapter officials.

This agreement is not just a piece of paper; it is a shield for our members and a bridge to better healthcare delivery. We look forward to a proactive and harmonious relationship with the hospital management.

For Unity, Protection & Empowerment.
