Condolence Message from the Nurses Union

The Nurses Union joins the Central Organization of Trade Unions (Kenya) in mourning the sudden and painful loss of Bro. Nelson Kiromo Mwaniki, the longest serving 3rd Signing COTU(K) Trustee and Deputy General Secretary of the Quarry & Mine Workers Union, who passed away on Sunday night, 10th May 2026, at Nairobi West Hospital.

Bro. Mwaniki was a steadfast champion for workers' rights and dignity, whose decades of service, solidarity, and commitment to the labour movement strengthened the voice of every Kenyan worker, including our nurses and healthcare professionals who continue to benefit from the gains he helped secure.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues at the Quarry & Mine Workers Union, and the entire COTU(K) fraternity during this difficult moment. We stand with you in prayer that the Almighty God grants his family strength and comfort.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy of service and unity continue to inspire us all.

International Nurses Week 2026 - Siaya County Celebrations

Last week, the Nurses Union, in collaboration with the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) and facility leadership across Siaya County, successfully marked International Nurses Week 2026 . This year's commemoration honored the unwavering commitment of nurses and midwives as the backbone of Kenya's healthcare system. Celebrations were held at Siaya County Referral Hospital, Bondo Sub-County Hospital, Ambira Sub-County Hospital, Bama Private Hospital, Ramula Health Center, Rwambwa Sub-County Hospital, and other facilities where activities continue to impact communities.

Across the county, nurses led high-impact services that directly touched lives. Key activities included Mama Health Talks to empower mothers on maternal and child wellness, immunization drives to safeguard children and families, community outreaches that extended care beyond hospital walls, and cervical, breast, and prostate cancer screenings to promote early detection and save lives. These initiatives reflect the theme of this year's celebration, advancing health for all through compassionate, skilled, and accessible nursing care.

The week also celebrated excellence within our ranks. Outstanding nurses from participating facilities were recognized and awarded for exemplary service, innovation, and leadership in patient care. KNUNM Siaya Branch leadership, working hand in hand with NNAK and supportive facility heads, ensured seamless coordination of all events. To every nurse and midwife in Siaya and across Kenya, thank you.

Your dedication heals, your courage inspires, and your service transforms lives.

Happy International Nurses Week to all Nurses and Midwives across the Country!

The Union (KNUNM) extends its profound appreciation to the Governor of Machakos County, Hon Wavinya Ndeti for her steadfast commitment to the nursing fraternity.

In a remarkable demonstration of partnership, the Governor, alongside the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) leadership led by President Collins Ajwang, officially launched the 2026 Nurses Week at the Machakos County Referral Hospital (Level 5) yesterday.

We also recognize and commend the strong presence of our Machakos Branch leadership, led by Chairman Heshbon Mwakavi, whose dedication continues to champion the rights and welfare of nurses at the grassroots level.

This collaborative launch underscores the vital synergy between county governance and professional associations in elevating the healthcare agenda.

This year's celebrations are guided by the powerful theme, "Our Nurses, Our Future, Empowered Nurses Save Lives," which vividly highlights the indispensable role that nurses play in fortifying healthcare infrastructure and driving positive patient outcomes.

Celebrating Nurses Week is not merely a routine annual observance; it is a critical opportunity to recognize, honor, and support the invaluable contributions of the frontline healthcare workers who serve as the backbone of our medical system.

Empowering nurses through better working environments, continuous training, and robust institutional support directly translates to saved lives and a healthier nation.

As we mark this dedication to service, the Union wishes all nurses across the country a deeply rewarding and Happy Nurses Week!

61st LABOUR DAY CELEBRATION

As we gather at Friends Chavakali High School in Vihiga County for this historic 61st Labour Day, the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM) stands proud as the heartbeat of the Kenyan labour movement, representing the dedicated frontline workers who safeguard our nation's health under the theme “Kenyan workers for economic growth, political stability, and job creation".

Our presence here in Vihiga, the first time this national fete has been hosted outside Nairobi underscores the vital role that nurses and midwives play in driving the health pillar of national development at the grassroots level.

In the spirit of this year's theme, we reaffirm that a healthy workforce is the engine of economic growth. However, true stability can only be achieved by addressing the urgent plight of our members, including the transition of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) nurses to permanent and pensionable terms, the implementation of delayed Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reviews, and resolving the acute nursing shortages that threaten our health system.

We stand in solidarity with the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) and all Kenyan workers, demanding that the promise of job creation is matched by the dignity of fair wages and safe, equitable working conditions for the heroes in white who labor day and night for the people of Kenya

The Union is deeply concerned by the prolonged suffering of 67 nurses in Vihiga County who have worked for 26 months without pay since their recruitment on Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms in May 2019.

It is unacceptable that while other cadres employed during the same period have received their full dues, these dedicated professionals continue to face financial hardship.

The Union maintains that this selective payment is not only a gross administrative failure but a clear case of discrimination that undermines the morale and dignity of the nursing fraternity in the county.

This persistent withholding of salaries is a direct violation of Section 17(1) of the Employment Act (2007), which mandates that an employer shall pay the entire amount of wages earned by or payable to an employee in respect of work done. Furthermore, Article 41(2)(a) of the Constitution of Kenya explicitly grants every worker the right to fair remuneration.

By failing to honour these legal obligations, the County Government has subjected these 67 nurses to unfair labour practices, contravening the very laws that protect the welfare of workers in this country.

Moving forward, the Union is committed to working collaboratively with the Vihiga County Government to resolve this impasse and ensure all 67 nurses receive their rightful, long-overdue arrears in full.

We urge the County Public Service Board and the Executive to prioritize this matter to avert industrial disharmony and restore equity in the health sector.

The Union will remain vigilant and will not rest until every nurse is treated with the fairness and respect they deserve under the law

28/04/2026

Yesterday marked a historic milestone for our fraternity as the reconciliatory team, under the able chairmanship of NNAK President Hon. Collins Ajwang', convened to chart a path toward a stronger, more united union.

In a spirit of collaboration, it was unanimously agreed that a broad-based interim leadership for the JOOTRH - KNUNM Chapter be established.

This interim office is mandated to champion the rights of our members and spearhead critical union affairs, including the streamlining of membership registration and subscriptions.

We are committed to ensuring that the interests of every JOOTRH nurse are at the forefront of this transition.

As your union, we echo the sentiments of the NNAK chair on the vital necessity of unity during this noble process. Our strength lies in our numbers and our shared vision; therefore, we call upon every nurse at JOOTRH to stand with us as we rebuild and refocus.

By working together, we ensure that our professional welfare and union matters are handled with the transparency and vigor they deserve.

Let us remain united and focused on the journey ahead. Solidarity forever!

LAMU STRIKE UPDATE

CONCILIATION MEETING IN LAMU COUNTY

Earlier today, the General Secretary of the Nurses Union Hon. Seth Kuka Panyako in the company of the National Deputy Organizing Secretary Mr. Stephen Ruteere, Industrial Relations Officer Mr. Peter Maroko, and our dedicated Lamu Branch officials led by the Branch Secretary Bro. Erick Otieno attended a critical joint conciliation meeting at the Lamu County Government offices.

This meeting was convened at the formal invitation of the County Labour Officer, Mr. Evans Mbithi, following the trade dispute filed regarding our ongoing industrial action.

The conciliation process is currently ongoing and centers strictly on the fundamental grievances raised by our members in the strike notice.

These core issues include the implementation of the Return-to-Work Formula dated 5th November 2025, the payment of withheld salaries from late 2020 and early 2021, the promotion and redesignation of stagnated staff, and the transition of contracted nurses to permanent and pensionable terms.

We are also pushing for the immediate implementation of the SRC salary review and addressing the acute nursing shortage that continues to compromise healthcare delivery across the county.

We wish to inform all members and the public that the final outcome of these proceedings will be communicated officially once the conciliation process is fully concluded.

In the meantime, the Union's position remains firm, the strike will continue unabated until all raised issues are fully and satisfactorily addressed by the County Government.

We urge all members to remain united and resolute in our quest for fair labor practices, better working conditions, and the dignity of our profession.

Solidarity Forever!
