Ge***al herpes is a s*xually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a herpes simplex virus (HSV). It can cause sores on your ge***al or re**al area, buttocks, and thighs. Ge***al herpes affects the skin or mucous membranes of the ge***als. The virus is spread from one person to another during s*xual contact.

There are 2 types of herpes simplex virus (HSV):

HSV-1 most often affects the mouth and lips and causes cold sores or fever blisters. But it can spread from the mouth to the ge***als during oral s*x.

HSV type 2 (HSV-2) most often causes ge***al herpes. It can be spread through skin contact or through fluids from the mouth or ge***als.

You may become infected with herpes if your skin, va**na, p***s, or mouth comes into contact with someone who already has herpes.

You are most likely to get herpes if you touch the skin of someone who has herpes sores, blisters, or a rash. But the virus can still be spread, even when no sores or other symptoms are present. In some cases, you do not know you are infected.

Symptoms of an Outbreak
Someone who has been exposed to the ge***al herpes virus may not be aware of the infection and might never have an outbreak of sores. However, if a person does have an outbreak, the symptoms can cause significant discomfort.
Someone with ge***al herpes may first notice itching or pain, followed by sores that appear a few hours to a few days later. The sores, which may appear on the va**na, p***s, sc***um, buttocks, or a**s, start out as red bumps that soon turn into red, watery blisters. The sores might make it very painful to urinate. The sores may open up, ooze fluid, or bleed; during a first herpes outbreak, they can take from a week to several weeks to heal. The entire ge***al area may feel very tender or painful, and the person may have flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, and swollen lymph nodes.
If future outbreaks occur, they tend to be less severe and shorter in duration, with sores healing faster.
