Researchers have found that exposing people with Alzheimer’s disease to synchronized light and sound at a frequency of 40 hertz can alter patterns of brain activity linked to memory and cognition. In healthy brains, neurons naturally coordinate their firing in rhythmic waves, with gamma frequencies around 40 hertz playing an important role in information processing. In Alzheimer’s disease, these rhythms often weaken or fall out of sync, reflecting disrupted communication between brain regions.

In clinical and laboratory studies, rhythmic sensory stimulation caused neural circuits to lock onto the external 40 hertz signal. Brain recordings showed increased gamma activity and improved synchronization across regions vulnerable to Alzheimer’s pathology. These effects were observed during stimulation and persisted for a period afterward, indicating that external sensory input can temporarily reshape ongoing brain dynamics. The response was measurable in areas involved in memory, attention, and sensory integration.

The findings demonstrate that brain rhythms are not fixed but can be influenced by precisely timed external signals. Rather than targeting plaques or tangles directly, this approach acts on the electrical coordination of neural networks. By restoring aspects of rhythmic synchrony, 40 hertz stimulation highlights a direct connection between sensory input and large scale brain organization in neurodegenerative disease.
