Haven Social Training

We assist individuals with both mental health and intellectual disabilities by empowering them through social skills training and behavior change making them more independent.

Haven Social Training endeavours to work with individuals that have intellectual disabilities, autism, ADHD, social challenges such as addictions, transition through various stages of life, among others. Haven Social Training also has a youth programme running called jichoche. Jichoche targets adolescents (pre-teens to young adults) from all walks of life with an aim to equip them with the necessary social skills for a better and brighter tomorrow. We tackle topics such as self-esteem and self-image, purpose, proper decision making skills, social relationships, conflict resolution skills, career paths, and so much more. We also have a session or two with parents under the same programme with an aim to bring to their attention a few valuable parenting skills. It is our deepest desire to see individuals and families made whole for a stronger and more resilient society and nation.

[09/15/20]   What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation.” – Glenn Close.

[07/14/20]   RE-LAUNCH

Re-launch means re-introducing something into the market in an assumedly improved status. The key to a RE-LAUNCH is that the item or service needs to have been in existence and either failed to meet market standards or had exceeded market standards hence needing improvement.

In the same manner that products and services are re-launched, human beings also need to RE-LAUNCH themselves to perform and produce at optimum levels.

Relaunching oneself is a necessary though scary evil. We live in a world and that is constantly judging, moving, growing and evolving which makes it hard to admit ones failures and shortcomings to oneself let alone others. There are societal set expectations placed by age, gender, location, education, finances, marital status, child bearing and rearing skills among others that we use as yardstick against others and worse still against ourselves.

Measuring oneself against these yardstick has more often than not led to a mental illness or breakdown which them necessitates a RE-LAUNCH.

RE-LAUNCHES in humans are not always preceded by a mental illness or breakdown, but by a necessity to re-invent oneself in order to live your best and purpose filled life. This can only be accomplished by taking a thorough in depth look at oneself, admitting to yourself your victories and failures and by God's Grace and guidance reinventing yourself into the person you were created to be.

Lesson for the day, understand the product and it's purpose, evaluate the product whether meeting it's purpose or not. Re-invent or improve the product to meets it purpose.

Isaiah 64:8 But now, LORD, you are our father. We are the clay, and you are our potter. All of us are work of your hands.
Let the potter mould you for His purpose.
Have a blessed day.

THE OFF WEEK.

I have had the strangest week with little to no activity or accomplishment whatsoever. I wake up every day with a list of things to do and by noon I had accomplished nothing which left me feeling low, depressed and confused.

See I have a plan and work to do but for some reason no matter how much I tried, I couldn't seem to round up the mental energy and capacity required to think through and carry out the activities.

This got me thinking, we hear a lot about an off day, can someone have an off week? I have consistently woken up each morning, showered, dressed even got my laptop out to work, unfortunately nothing seemed to happen for five days straight.

Our minds and bodies need and require time to relax and adjust to the direction and trajectory that we have decided to take. I was doing some jobs which I quickly realised weren't for me so stopped immediately and decided to switch back to what I know and love. Being a social trainer and editor/writter. However my mind was still hooked on the jobs I was doing and was not able to adjust which lead to the off week.

So my lesson and conclusion. When shifting gears be it in jobs, careers, businesses, homes etc, allow your mind to let go and adjust to your new plans and hence norm. Don't be too quick to jump into new opportunities before off loading the burdens and requirements of the last. This will ensure you have a clean slate, clear mind and energy to create in your new space.
Have a blessed day.

Compassion costs nothing, show it freely for all

[05/21/20]   UNDERSTANDING MENTAL ILLNESS
Good Morning,
We continue dealing with understanding what mental well-being is about. Previously we dealt with understanding “Mental Health” and learned that we all at one point in our lives experience a disturbance to our mental well-being just like we do to our physical well-being.
Today we outline what “Mental Illness” means.
Mental Illness refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders involving:
• Significant changes in thinking, emotions and behavior
• Distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities
While mental health is the foundation for emotions, thinking, communication, learning, resilience and self-esteem, it is also key to relationships, personal and emotional well-being and contributing to community or society. Mental illness hence affects the way people think, feel, behave, or interact with others.
To understand mental Illness, we need to define what a disorder is.
WHAT IS A DISORDER?
A disorder is defined as a set of problems, which result in causing significant difficulty, distress, impairment and/or suffering in a person’s daily life. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a disorder as an illness that disrupts normal physical or mental function. They are physical or mental conditions that disturb the regular or normal functions of everyday activities and day to day life. They can take up a lot of time and complicate the normal functioning of an individual.
SUMMARY: Mental illness is a disorder that affects a wide range of mental health conditions/disorders related your mood, thinking and behavior that consequently affect your

[05/19/20]   UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH

As the World Health Organization famously says, “There is no health without mental health.”
In the course of a lifetime, not all people will experience a mental illness, but everyone will have a challenge with their mental well-being (i.e., their mental health) just like we all have challenges with our physical well-being from time to time.

Mental health/ well-being involves: our emotions, our thoughts and feelings, our ability to solve problems and overcome difficulties, our social connections, and our understanding of the world around us. From time to time, we may struggle with one or more of the above states for a period of time.

Health isn’t like an on/off switch. There are different degrees of health. People move on a continuum ranging from great or good health to so-so health to poor health to illness or disability. For example, some people have good health and have no problems going about their lives. Some people experience serious health problems, and their poor health has a very negative impact on their life. Some people have serious health problems that last for a long time, and others have serious health problems that resolve very quickly. Many people fall somewhere in the middle—they’re generally in good health, though the occasional problem may come up. Mental health is the same way.

Just as someone who feels unwell may not have a serious illness, people may have poor mental health without a mental illness. We all have days where we feel a bit down, or stressed out, or overwhelmed by something that’s happening in our lives. An important part of good mental health is the ability to look at problems or concerns realistically. Good mental health isn’t about feeling happy and confident 100% of time and ignoring any problems. It’s about living and coping well despite problems.
