Let's talk about BREASTFEEDING.
This week ( August 1st to August 7th) is the World Breastfeeding Week.
So, are you breastfeeding? Or, do you know anyone breastfeeding?
These are some of the basic facts you need to know about breastfeeding.
Did you know that breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival?
Also, did you know that if breastfeeding were scaled up to near universal levels, about 820 000 child lives would be saved every year?
1. Mothers should initiate breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth.
2. Babies should be EXCLUSIVELY breastfed for six months to achieve optimal growth.
3. Breast feeding should continue for up to 2 years and beyond.
4.Breastfeeding protects babies from child hood illnesses.
5. Breastfeeding is beneficial to the mother, it protects the mother from ovarian cancer, diabetes and post-partum depression. Breastfeeding is also a method of family planning.
It is also good note that infant formula including dairy milk does not contain anti- bodies that protect the baby as it grows.
Also, note that EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding means no water, no porridge, no fruit juice, no mashed bananas until the baby is SIX MONTHS.
Weaning at six months should be done by a CUP and SPOON.
In all this, discard the bottle. It introduces viruses and bacteria in the weak gut of the baby leading to endless visits to the hospital because of fever, diarrhea and vomiting.
Kenya's parliament enacted the Breastfeeding Mothers' bill 2017 which provides modalities for employers to support breastfeeding working mothers in the workplace and also to provide for baby changing facilities in public spaces and facilities.
