March is colon and re**al cancer awareness month globally. Colon and re**al cancer is the 3rd and 4th commonest cancer in male and females in Kenya respectively. Screening is the most effective way to prevent,detect and treat colon and re**al cancers. Screening is recommended for everyone above 45 years. People with 1st degree relatively with colore**al cancer below 45 years, start screening 10 years earlier. Screening can be by; 1. F***l immunochemical test (FIT),this is a stool based test, 2.Colonoscopy, this is a day care procedure done from the clinic or the hospital, you will be sedated.
I see lots of patients with colon and re**al cancer, some with early disease and others with advanced disease.

This week we had a high level delegation from the Arab league visiting Kenyatta National Hospital. A professor from Egypt shared their experiences on how Egypt was able to successfully eliminate Hepatitis C in 2023. Their eyes are now set on Hepatitis B virus and Hepatocellular Cancer (HCC). Hepatocellular Cancer is one of the mostly deadly and devastating cancer of the liver. It require surveillance, early diagnosis and treatment for improved survivorship. Our country is amongst the zone in the world with high Hepatitis B and Hepatocellular. Data and implementation science are the new matrix for global development. We(European-Africa HPB-Kenya, Gastro Society of Kenya and KESHO) will be engaging with the Kenyan Government on policy and implementation measures to curb Hepatitis B and HCC.

A week well spent at Kenyatta National hospital with colleagues. The Kenyatta Hospital Surgical Week is dedicated to very advanced surgical and endoscopic procedures and performed by experts surgeons. Doctors and Nurses volunteer their time and their expertise to provide a free service to needy Kenyans.
