Gagging when introducing solids is normal as babies are learning to regulate food amounts and coordinating chewing and swallowing and coping with new textures and consistency of food.
Tips:
- Stay calm and TALK them through it- Don't slap the back- you may dislodge the food further down.
Choking is an emergency and requires first aid: 5 back blows or chest thrusts in infants and abdominal thrusts in kids >1 year. Best learnt through first aid training.
