Future Clinicians Experience Spinal Injury Care at NSIRH

Today, Clinical Medicine and Surgery students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) visited the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) for an insightful academic trip focused on spinal cord injury care.

The students were warmly welcomed by Chairperson Training and Attachment Dr. Miriam Muriithi, Student Coordinator Lornah Wambani, and Physiotherapist John Luchwala Masinde.

During an interactive session with our multidisciplinary team, the students gained valuable insights into spinal injury management, prevention of complications, the impact of road traffic accidents, and the importance of early referral for spinal injury patients.

The learning experience concluded with a guided hospital tour led by Masinde and expert clinician Ann Muthei, giving the students a firsthand look at the specialized services and patient-centered care provided at NSIRH.

Advancing Patient Care at NSIRH

Yesterday, we were honored to welcome Steve Drennan, Regional Manager representing Arjo, a global medical technology company headquartered in Sweden. He was warmly received by our Head of Division of Integrated Health Services, Dr. Andrew Muriithi.
During a CME session, Steve sensitized our multidisciplinary team on Pressure Injury Prevention, focusing on:
• The clinical impact of pressure injuries in spinal and immobility-related patients.
• The financial burden linked to extended hospital stays and treatment costs.
• How Arjo’s holistic solutions—including therapeutic surfaces, patient positioning systems, mobility strategies, and workflow support—can reduce incidence rates and improve patient outcomes.

In a symbolic gesture, Steve handed over an Arjo Atmos Air Velaris Alternating Pressure Mattress to our Assistant Director Health Administration, Joseph Nyamohanga.

He later toured our wards with in-charge Esther Ngigi, who shared insights on our current mattress use and our exciting masterplan to expand NSIRH to a 350-bed capacity—a milestone in strengthening specialized care for spinal injury patients.

The National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) successfully hosted KMTC Port Reitz Neuroscience Rehabilitation students for a four-day educational tour focused on spine and rehabilitation care. The intensive program provided valuable clinical exposure and hands-on experience, culminating in insightful closing remarks from the KMTC Port Reitz Principal.

Rehabilitation Education Tour | NSIRH

Yesterday, National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) was delighted to welcome a group of physiotherapy students from Nakuru KMTC for a four-day educational tour.

The students were received by the Head of Division Integrated Health Services, Dr. Andrew Muriithi; Ag. Student Coordinator, Jannette Sang; and Physiotherapist, John Luchwala Masinde.

During the session, Masinde provided an insightful overview of NSIRH, highlighting the hospital’s role as a specialized centre for spinal cord injury care. He underscored the importance of multidisciplinary team collaboration and NSIRH’s commitment to delivering comprehensive, patient-centred care to clients from Kenya and beyond.

The educational tour aims to equip the students with essential knowledge, practical skills, and a professional attitude required to effectively implement rehabilitative and promotive interventions in both clinical and community settings within physiotherapy practice.
