Rehabilitation Education Tour | NSIRH

Yesterday, National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) was delighted to welcome a group of physiotherapy students from Nakuru KMTC for a four-day educational tour.

The students were received by the Head of Division Integrated Health Services, Dr. Andrew Muriithi; Ag. Student Coordinator, Jannette Sang; and Physiotherapist, John Luchwala Masinde.

During the session, Masinde provided an insightful overview of NSIRH, highlighting the hospital’s role as a specialized centre for spinal cord injury care. He underscored the importance of multidisciplinary team collaboration and NSIRH’s commitment to delivering comprehensive, patient-centred care to clients from Kenya and beyond.

The educational tour aims to equip the students with essential knowledge, practical skills, and a professional attitude required to effectively implement rehabilitative and promotive interventions in both clinical and community settings within physiotherapy practice.

NSIRH remains proud to support the training of future healthcare professionals and to champion excellence in rehabilitation care.

🏃‍♂️ One Race, One Goal: Ending AIDS Among Adolescents & Young People 🏃‍♀️

As we commemorate World AIDS Day, we echo the message from our Director of Medical Services, Dr. Kibet P. Shikuku:
“ABSTAIN if you can, and if you can’t, use PROTECTION.”

Let’s unite to protect our adolescents and youth, raise awareness, and take action toward an HIV-free generation.

🏃♂️🌍 As We Approach World AIDS Day… 🌍🏃♀️
Kenya will host the National Half Marathon on November 30, 2025, at Nyayo Stadium under the theme:
“One Race, One Goal: Ending AIDS among Adolescents and Young People.”

This theme is critical because adolescents and young people account for nearly 40% of new HIV infections, and Kenya’s HIV prevalence remains at about 4%.

At the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH), we see firsthand how HIV affects the rehabilitation journey.
🔬 HIV can weaken bone marrow and reduce blood cell production
🩹 It slows healing and decreases bone density
🦠 A high viral load delays wound healing, increases infections, and prolongs rehabilitation
💊 Some ARVs may affect bone strength, making consistent medical monitoring essential

This is why our facility remains committed to supporting adolescents and young people living with HIV. Successful spinal cord injury rehabilitation requires strong immunity, timely treatment, and holistic care—and every young person deserves the opportunity to heal, thrive, and live free from stigma.

Together, we run with one purpose:
Ending AIDS among adolescents and young people.
