Urgent Action Fund-Africa UAF-Africa Our funding mechanisms ensure that we respond to most urgent requests in real time.

Urgent Action Fund Africa is a pan-African rapid response Fund that supports advocates for Women and Girls' Rights, their organisations, collectives and movements to take actions that sustain their work and themselves before, during and after urgent situations.. Operating as an innovative virtual organisation, the Fund boasts a strategic presence in Africaโ€™s four sub-regions in East Africa: Nairobi, Kenya & Dar es salaam, Tanzania; North Africa: Cairo, Egypt; Southern Africa; Harare, Zimbabwe; and West Africa: Abuja, Nigeria & Douala,Cameroon. Recognising the need to move resources rapidly on a continent where opportunities arise and decline quickly, UAF-Africa uses a Rapid Response Grant making model to support unanticipated, time sensitive, innovative and unique initiatives. The Fund supports women to seize windows of opportunity that promote womenโ€™s agency in democratic governance, economic justice, natural resources governance, conflict transformation and justice processes while protecting their personhood, integrity and human rights. We achieve this by working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. We conduct our due diligence for approval or decline of a grant within 48 hours, hence the name Urgent Action Fund-Africa. To date, the Fund has supported over 600 womenโ€™s catalytic initiatives in 48 African countries. Grant applications are accepted in the 5 African Union official languages (English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese and Arabic).

On International Womenโ€™s Day 2026, in uncertain times, we honour African women human rights advocates leading change across the continent.
The reality is urgent. Nearly 1 in 3 women globally has experienced physical or sexual violence, according to UN Women. Yet less than 1% of global philanthropic funding goes directly to womenโ€™s rights organisations.

This yearโ€™s call - Give to Gain reminds us that investing in womenโ€™s rights is more than support โ€“ it is strategy, protection, and power.

This moment in history can feel overwhelming - but itโ€™s also a moment for smart, collective action.

The evidence is clear: investing in women-led movements accelerates progress on climate, democracy, and human rights-and womenโ€™s and feminist funds are critical to making that investment reach where it matters most.

Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m supporting : to ensure more resources reach the movements already creating real change.

2024 was a year of burden and breath. Across Africa, women human rights advocates faced war, climate disasters, economic crises, and gender-based violence. Yet, in the fiercest storms, they created space for hope, joy, and power.

In solidarity, we provided 419 grants across 46 countries, grounding our work in healing justice - because care is not indulgence, it is resistance.

Itโ€™s that time of the year again! ๐ŸŽ‰

Weโ€™re thrilled to share with you โ€˜Sacred Refusal: Singing Through Struggles of Violence, Grief and Calamity,โ€™ our annual learning report 2024, that explores feminist movements through the lens of the mythologies that have shaped our regions for generations.

๐ŸŽญ From legendary figures like Puteri Gunung Ledang to Queen Che Siti Wan Kembang, we see how these ancient stories of resistance, care, and collective imagination continue to inspire todayโ€™s feminist movements, creating new mythologies of resistance and survival.

๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™€๏ธ Our annual learning report reflects on the lessons learned through feminist participatory grantmaking, which echoes the ancient wisdom of community care. Just as local myths have guided communities through struggles, todayโ€™s movements are creating memories of resistance that challenge dominant narratives and oppressive systems.

๐Ÿ’Œ This report, as described by our Board member Pranom โ€˜Beeโ€™ Somwong, is "a love letter to our movementsโ€”a living archive of survival, strategy, and sacred refusal," where ancient and contemporary stories intertwine to highlight the resilience and resourcefulness of our movements.

โœŠ๐Ÿพ Informed by the powerful stories of our foremothers, this report curates feminist knowledge of resistance, turning traditional symbols into icons of hope and strength. It celebrates the sacred work of those at the frontlines of justice, offering a tribute to their courage and vision.

The 6th African Philanthropy Conference reminded us that development that ignores gender reinforces inequality. However, development that listens, funds, and elevates feminist movements can shift power and rebuild systems.

We have seen this at Urgent Action Fund Africa firsthand, from solar-powered water access in Zimbabwe, to women with disabilities leading climate advocacy in Malawi. When financing is feminist, it is effective, equitable, and lasting.

Now is the time to fund with care, courage, and clarity so that the most excluded will be at the forefront of their struggle.
