It’s that time of the year again! 🎉

We’re thrilled to share with you ‘Sacred Refusal: Singing Through Struggles of Violence, Grief and Calamity,’ our annual learning report 2024, that explores feminist movements through the lens of the mythologies that have shaped our regions for generations.

🎭 From legendary figures like Puteri Gunung Ledang to Queen Che Siti Wan Kembang, we see how these ancient stories of resistance, care, and collective imagination continue to inspire today’s feminist movements, creating new mythologies of resistance and survival.

👯‍♀️ Our annual learning report reflects on the lessons learned through feminist participatory grantmaking, which echoes the ancient wisdom of community care. Just as local myths have guided communities through struggles, today’s movements are creating memories of resistance that challenge dominant narratives and oppressive systems.

💌 This report, as described by our Board member Pranom ‘Bee’ Somwong, is "a love letter to our movements—a living archive of survival, strategy, and sacred refusal," where ancient and contemporary stories intertwine to highlight the resilience and resourcefulness of our movements.

✊🏾 Informed by the powerful stories of our foremothers, this report curates feminist knowledge of resistance, turning traditional symbols into icons of hope and strength. It celebrates the sacred work of those at the frontlines of justice, offering a tribute to their courage and vision.

The 6th African Philanthropy Conference reminded us that development that ignores gender reinforces inequality. However, development that listens, funds, and elevates feminist movements can shift power and rebuild systems.

We have seen this at Urgent Action Fund Africa firsthand, from solar-powered water access in Zimbabwe, to women with disabilities leading climate advocacy in Malawi. When financing is feminist, it is effective, equitable, and lasting.

Now is the time to fund with care, courage, and clarity so that the most excluded will be at the forefront of their struggle.

In , we recognise that solidarity, collaboration, and a culture of sharing strengthen our work. We leverage both the collective and regional uniqueness of each Urgent Action Fund to strengthen our responses, sharing resources with each other and coordinating our efforts, particularly in complex crisis settings that are increasingly transnational. We identify and prioritise the concerns of activists and groups in their contexts while spotting global trends, making our responses more effective.

Urgent Action Fund Africa remains steadfast in resourcing African Women’s Rights Advocates despite ongoing shifts in the philanthropic ecosystem.

Defending women’s rights and responding to crisis requires more than financial support. Our feminist-led approach goes beyond funding; we prioritise movement building, advocacy, and the creation of spaces for women’s voices to be heard. Our latest piece, “Effective Crisis Response Takes More Than Money” explores why timely feminist-led funding is a must as we stand in solidarity with African women’s rights advocates.

And we do not fund when a crisis peaks and then step away: we recognize that activists have multifaceted needs that emerge over time as a crisis unfolds, and we accompany them long after most donors have moved on.
