Center for Public Health and Development joined the Digital Health Agency - Kenya, the Ministry of Health, Kenya, key partners, and stakeholders to validate the AI in Health Guidelines for Kenya’s health sector.

The process included extensive stakeholder consultations, a review of the best global practices, and alignment with national health and data protection policies.

Dr. Fred Mutisya, AI lead, Kenya Health Informatics Association, highlighted the importance of appropriately validating the guidelines by mapping them within the governance ladder, ensuring they align with hard law for binding force and soft law for practical implementation. This process confirmed that the are consistent with national policies and frameworks, practical for implementers, and positioned to shape Kenya’s digital health landscape responsibly.

As Kenya moves toward shaping a robust and responsible AI landscape for the health sector, the meeting ensured that the guidelines are practical, evidence-based, and responsive to Kenya’s evolving health priorities.

Reliable oxygen access is one of the most transformative investments a health system can make. Through our Oxygen-as-a-Service model, we’re seeing facilities respond faster to emergencies, clinicians feel more confident in providing respiratory care, and families gain renewed trust in their local health centres.

The impact goes beyond numbers; it’s about stability, preparedness, and the reassurance that lifesaving oxygen will be there when it’s needed most. Every milestone represents a patient supported, a health worker empowered, and a community strengthened.

For most of us, breathing is effortless.
But in many hospitals across Africa, delivering medical oxygen to a patient in distress remains one of healthcare’s most complex and high-stakes challenges.

An analysis by the Center for Public Health and Development from health facilities in Homabay and Busia counties reveals a powerful story of both impact and fragility in oxygen delivery systems.

When oxygen reaches a patient on time, the results are life-saving:
𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘅𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟯𝟴% 𝘁𝗼 𝟵𝟴% 𝗦𝗽𝗢₂.
𝗔 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟰𝟲% 𝘁𝗼 𝟵𝟲% 𝗦𝗽𝗢₂.

Yet the same data exposes the delicate balance behind every success, the fragile power grids that keep concentrators running, the missing supplies like distilled water that can halt therapy, and the human expertise that determines whether or not a child breathes again.

The lesson is clear: 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗱𝗼.
From stable power to training and maintenance, resilience in oxygen delivery is built on the smallest details. Every breath counts, and every system behind it must be just as reliable.

As Month draws to a close, we’re reminded that awareness must not end with October.

This year’s theme, 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚, 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙅𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨, resonated deeply with us at the Center for Public Health and Development. Each woman’s story, whether of courage, diagnosis, survival, or advocacy, underscores the importance of access to early detection, quality care, and support at every step.

As we turn the page on October, we carry forward one truth: the fight against breast cancer is not a month-long campaign, but a year-round commitment.
· Here’s how you can continue making a difference:
· Encourage regular screening and self-examination
· Support women-led health initiatives
· Share stories that break stigma and spark conversations

Every story still matters. Every journey still deserves attention.

Our close-out meetings in 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮, with support from Better Futures CoLab, brought together county and facility-level stakeholders to reflect on piloting the Oxygen-as-a-Service (O2aaS) model.

Over the project’s life, hashtag showed that sustainable access to hashtag is not only possible but transformative in improving patient outcomes and quality of care in resource-limited settings.

Discussions focused on disseminating findings, defining next steps for hashtag beyond donor support, and developing an asset transition plan. One insight was clear: while O2aaS is feasible and impactful, the absence of robust billing frameworks and policy guidance continues to frustrate its operationalization.

These lessons align with hashtag ’sNationalOxygenRoadmap, which emphasizes reliable oxygen ecosystems, county-level ownership, and financing mechanisms for sustainability. By grounding our work within this roadmap, O2aaS provided evidence on how innovative delivery models can complement national strategies and inform future policy.

This raises a bigger question: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘅𝘆𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁?

Reflecting on the 10th Association of Kenya (MAK) Conference, we at the Center for Public Health and Development are proud to have hosted a panel on the national integration of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).

Key takeaway: POCUS is a crucial tool for transforming maternal health in Kenya.

With midwives and nurses comprising the majority of frontline healthcare workers at Level 2–4 facilities, sensitizing them to POCUS ensures early detection, timely referrals, and improved outcomes for mothers and babies.

At CPHD, we remain committed to advancing policies and practices that make POCUS a standard part of antenatal care, because collaboration and innovation are key to strengthening our health system.

As we recap some of the key discussions on POCUS from the , one highlight was the urgent gap in maternal care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum of eight antenatal care (ANC) visits for pregnant women, with at least one ultrasound scan recommended before 24 weeks of gestation. However, a significant barrier in many regions, including Kenya, is the lack of access to this vital diagnostic tool. With only 11% of Kenyan healthcare facilities currently having an ultrasound machine, expanding POCUS access is vital.

This will help close this critical gap, increase antenatal care attendance, and ultimately save lives by improving the early detection of high-risk conditions.
