A huge part of mental healing is rooted in self-awareness. Here, Hilda Muthoni was facilitating a session on how to use the Johari Window as a self-assessment tool. Isn't it wonderful that children are always eager to learn new things?

On a scale of 0 - 10, how aware are you of yourself and your relationship with others?

THERAPISTS' MENTAL HEALTH

Q: How do therapists take care of their mental health?
A: Through personal psychotherapy, case supervision by counselors who are more experienced, self-care and mentally preservative actions. .

Q: Is it tiring listening to other people's problems?
A: It's not usually tiring but it can be overwhelming when there is resistance to therapy or when met with an extremely traumatic/difficult case. The therapist's role is to create a safe space for both the client and themself and to guide the direction of the session. .

Q: Does it affect you when you listen to other people's problems?
A: No. However in the past when I started practising I experienced severe burnout and secondary trauma. This was as a result of neglecting my own mental health and self-care for months while at the same time providing psycho-social care for victims of sexual trauma daily. I took a break from practising inorder to heal. .

I know vision boarding is supposed to be a serious activity but I like it because of bonding and realizing each other's shared goals.

This boy is called Medrick. He would like to be a Bank Manager and Social Worker in future for two reasons:
1. To afford basic human rights (and some privileges would be nice too)
2. To end child labour

He's already an activist at his own capacity. You can read his life story at iamheshima.org

The only bright side of this corona situation is the opportunity to convene as a family and have deep and honest conversations. If your family is as big as mine then you can discuss topics which will enhance your self-awareness. My favorite activities during this period has been taking online personality tests (and there are many interesting ones). I've also discovered my blindspots through interacting with family.

My favorite part of the mental health journey has been the chance to connect with different individuals because of a common/familiar struggle and helping eachother cope better. There's never a bad mental health story. And I'm happy that the journey continues

"The senator said the fact that one in four Kenyans suffers from one form of a mental problem should be a wake-up call for the country to discuss mental health."

β€œWhat we want is if you go to the hospital and the doctor cannot find anything or any physical manifestation of illness there should be a psychologist or counsellor nearby who can then take over the case. He can then treat you for mental illness,” she said.
