BREAST-FEEDING AND CONTRACEPTION
Use of Contraceptives after delivery should be done cautiously as most contraceptives affect breast milk production.
Can you get pregnant if you're breastfeeding?
Yes, you can.
Usually the myth is that you can't get pregnant.
Breastfeeding reduces the chances of getting pregnant unlike if you were not breastfeeding.
Your first period shouldn't be used as an indicator that you need to start family planning. You may experience your ovulation before you get the periods and end up conceiving.
It's advisable to prevent pregnancy even before you get your periods after birth.
During the breastfeeding period the menstrual flow might be irregular, hence use of safe days is not recommended.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO USE PILLS OR OTHER HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVES AS YOU BREASTFEED:
- It's recommended to wait for at least 6 weeks before using any hormonal contraceptive. This allows the breast feeding pattern to become well established.
- Use oral pills that contain progestin only as they don't affect milk production
In case you intend to use condoms as a form of family planning you might find it discomfort able because of the va**nal dryness experienced during the breastfeeding period.
Lubricants can come handy in this case.
