DMRC is a Primary medical center registered in Kenya. We have a medical center in Ngara and actively run social media platforms that educate people about diabetes. The journey was started in May 2014 on Facebook and so far has more than 16,400 community members and more than 110,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram. We have diversified our social platforms by reaching those in Twitter and Whatsapp. The community is mainly run by two individuals who partner with other health professionals to give information to the people. The platforms give selfless information and have created a lot of awareness visible from the feedback we receive. DMRC has also helped people with diabetes to get donors of free glucometers, prosthetic limbs, strips, and drugs, while others have been able to buy them at affordable prices.

As we establish ourselves, we aim to set up centers all over Kenya, especially in rural and urban areas where such centers are few and sometimes unavailable. We believe that information is power, and nobody should suffer from diabetes due to its lack of knowledge or accessibility. With the help of partners, well-wishers and donors, we believe that we can reduce the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. We will work with various professionals to offer the following services:

-Free Blood sugar screening

-Eye and foot screening

-Blood pressure check

-Educating people on nutrition and about diabetes in its broader sense

-Provision of insulin at subsidized prices/ Free to all T1 diabetics

-Organizing events such as walks, and outreach activities that will enable those with diabetes to get free services and donations

-Carry out research through surveys to know the most significant challenge people with diabetes face and how they can be supported.

- Kidney function test

- Arterial function test

- All Laboratory tests

Discussions from our group Kenya Diabetes Support Group

"Blood sugar testing should be mandatory in all triages too. The number of people who go to hospital and leave without getting diagnosed is crazy! I went to the hospital so many times with a flu that was just not healing! Having spent thousands of shillings in tests and medication, a young doctor randomly asked whether my blood sugar was ever tested, and I said no. Upon checking, it was confirmed I was diabetic. With all the cash people pay at the triage, a simple blood sugar test should be made mandatory" member

UNDERSTANDING HOW THE PANCREAS WORKS.

By releasing insulin, the pancreas does a great job because it enables every function of the body to be powered. However the amount of insulin released differs depending on the amount of glucose in the blood.

Just like adrenaline that is released in response to a certain powerful emotion, the pancreas releases insulin at the detection of rising sugars in the blood. On the other hand, if the pancreas detects a drop of glucose in the blood, it slows insulin secretion and increases the output of glucagon. Glucagon breaks glycogen in the liver which allows glucose to be released to the bloodstream.

Throughout the day and night, small amounts of insulin (basal insulin) gets released to help the body in its functions such as heartbeat, breathing and senses among others. At times however the pancreas releases a lot of insulin(blast insulin). This is usually released after taking a meal which fills the blood with glucose. This is the reason why sugars rise up to 7.5 mmol after taking a meal. The blast of insulin allows the glucose to enter the body cells.
