Malaba OSBP Leads Border Sanitation Drive under “Epuka Uchafu, Afya Mipakani”

Malaba One Stop Border Post (OSBP) has intensified sanitation efforts at the border through the “Epuka Uchafu, Afya Mipakani” campaign.

The initiative saw teams conduct training for OSBP stakeholders on environmental hygiene, capacity-building for cleaners on infection prevention and control (IPC), and culminated in a major clean-up exercise within the border area.

These activities support the national “Epuka Uchafu, Afya Nyumbani” campaign, spearheaded by the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, to promote hygiene and safeguard community health across the country.

By strengthening hygiene practices at Points of Entry, the Ministry continues to enhance public health, safe trade, and cross-border collaboration.

Kenya and Uganda conducted a joint Strategic Risk Assessment at the Busia One Stop Border Post to identify priority hazards, assess vulnerabilities, and agree on mitigation measures.

The exercise brought together health, security, and border management teams, reinforcing commitments under the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005).

With ongoing regional health risks such as Ebola in the DRC, the collaboration underscores both countries’ determination to secure borders, protect lives, and build resilient health systems.

Port Health staff at JKIA joined the rest of the country in marking National Nurses Week, which ran from 6th to 12th May, culminating today with activities to commemorate International Nurses Day.

To mark the day, Port Health conducted a special outreach targeting taxi drivers operating from Terminal 2, who often have limited opportunities to seek healthcare services due to their demanding work schedules.

A total of 47 drivers were engaged through health talks and screened for blood pressure, blood sugar, and voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). Several drivers were found to have elevated blood pressure, received immediate treatment, and were referred for follow-up care.

This initiative reflects the commitment of Port Health staff to bring essential healthcare services closer to underserved and at-risk populations.
