WORKPLACE SAFETY IS NOT OPTIONAL – IT IS A RESPONSIBILITY
Safety at the workplace is something many people take lightly until something goes wrong. The truth is, many people have been injured and businesses disrupted simply because safety was ignored or pushed aside.
Recently, we witnessed the building collapse in South C. Thankfully, no lives were lost, but the incident was a serious warning. It showed us how dangerous negligence can be. Poor construction practices, lack of proper inspections, and ignoring safety standards can easily turn into tragedy.
We also saw the fire incident at Luthuli Avenue, where traders lost goods worth millions in a matter of hours. Many businesses were not prepared — no fire extinguishers, no clear escape routes, and limited fire safety awareness. Fire does not give warnings, and when it strikes, the losses are immediate and devastating.
Kenya is not immune to tremors, fires, and other workplace emergencies. Many buildings are not structurally fit to handle such situations. When safety measures are ignored, workers, customers, and the general public are exposed to unnecessary risk.
Workplace safety is not just about helmets and reflectors.
It is about:
Proper building design and regular inspections
Fire preparedness and functional equipment
Training workers on emergency response
Using the right PPE for the right task
Following safety regulations without shortcuts
At Nairobi Safety Shop, we believe safety is not about selling products — it is about protecting lives, livelihoods, and businesses. That is why we continue to educate, equip, and support workplaces to build a strong safety culture.
Safety should never be treated as an expense. It is an investment in people, businesses, and the future.
Let us not wait for loss of life to take safety seriously.
Prevention is always better than cure.
Because every person deserves to go to work — and return home — safely.
