Thank you to the hosting today’s sensitization session that allowed for focused and practical conversations with nursing students and graduates on career opportunities in Austria.

The session covered the current nursing demand in Austria, employment conditions and salary structures, recognition of UoN nursing qualifications, and clear pathways for nurses interested in working abroad. We were honored to be joined by Georg Willeit Willeit, Vice President of Lebenshilfe (Austria), whose insights added great value to the discussion.

A huge appreciation to Nursing Students Chairperson and Dean Johnson Ireri Kinyua and from Dean of Students Office.

We appreciate the collaboration and look forward to continued engagement with the University of Nairobi in preparing nurses for global opportunities.

Together with our partners Pendl Piswanger, Angelika Kiessling-Kranzelmayer, We had the opportunity to meet with Mount Kenya University - MKU, our long standing partner, to advance ethical and structured pathways for skilled labour collaboration with Austria. The discussion focused on curriculum alignment, apprenticeship models, governance, additional opportunities for graduates and transparent migration processes. We held a productive meeting at the Labour Office with the Principal Secretary for Labour, P.S. Shadrack Mwadime, together with Angelika Kiessling-Kranzelmayer and Rose Brandstätter (PMP®).

The discussion focused on strengthening Kenya Austria collaboration for ethical labour mobility. Angelika is in Kenya to identify technical, hospitality and healthcare talent for Austria, while TYE and Pendl Piswanger continue to champion ethical recruitment aligned with both Kenyan and Austrian labour standards.

A key highlight was ethical recruitment. Candidates do not pay any recruiting fees, in line with Austrian labour laws and international recruiting standards. Furthermore, the comprehensive preparation for living and working in Austria was highlighted in order to ensure successful into the labor market. The P.S. appreciated this recruitment approach.

We discussed the labour market context, with Austria facing a significant workforce shortage due to an ageing population, and high demand in healthcare, technical and hospitality sectors. Clarifications were also made on the nursing pathway, including equal pay between Kenyan and Austrian nurses, and clear progression from assistant nurse to fully qualified practice after language and system integration.

This meeting reaffirmed the growing opportunity for structured, ethical and mutually beneficial labour mobility between Kenya and Austria.
