The Karen Hospital

The Karen Hospital The Karen Hospital is a multi-specialty healthcare provider offering world class medical treatment at affordable costs.

On March 31, 2006, The Karen Hospital opened its doors to the Kenyan Public. This was the culmination of a noble idea that was conceived by two Black African Doctors, Betty Muthoni Gikonyo and Dan Kibuka Gikonyo both USA trained Cardiologists who carried the welfare of the Kenyan people in their hearts. This was the first tertiary hospital built by indigenous Kenyans since in the pre- and post ind

ependence era. The Karen Hospital is located in Karen, a name which many will recognize as the setting for the movie, “Out of Africa,'' which told the story of author Isak Dinesen, who used the pen name Karen Blixen, and who lived and worked in Kenya and wrote about Kenya and her love for it.

Kenya’s surgical landscape is rapidly evolving, driven by innovation, collaboration, and a strong commitment from local experts to deliver world-class care.

At a recent forum by the Surgical Society of Kenya, with participation from our very own , surgeons from across the country came together to share insights on advancing surgical care. Key discussions highlighted the growing role of technology, the need for greater investment in medical infrastructure, and the importance of strengthening trust in local expertise.

With tools such as camera-assisted procedures, real-time collaboration, and continuous training, the future of surgery in Kenya is becoming more precise, accessible, and patient-centered. Notably, The Karen Hospital was among the first hospitals in the country to adopt and implement such innovations, reinforcing our commitment to staying at the forefront of surgical excellence.

At The Karen Hospital, we are proud to be part of this progress. Through our skilled multidisciplinary teams, advanced equipment, and dedication to continuous learning.

Together, we are shaping a future where patients can access high-quality, specialized care right here at home.

A sweet reunion filled with gratitude

Yesterday, Nurse Lucy Mwangi (5th from left) returned to share a special moment with the colleagues she worked alongside for many years, bringing along a cake as a heartfelt thank you.

After retiring last June, she came back not just to reconnect, but to appreciate the incredible support, teamwork, and thoughtful gifts she received during her send-off.

It was a beautiful reminder that the bonds built over years of caring for others don’t fade with time; they grow stronger. Moments like these show that beyond the profession, it’s the people, the shared experiences, and the unity that truly make the journey worthwhile.
