A neglected area. The world population is showing a shift with an increase in the elderly population due to medical advancement, improved nutrition and other factors. 72.0 years was the average life expectancy at birth of the global population in 2016 according to the WHO.
In Kenya the Geriatric field remains unrecognised, special needs of the elderly are often neglected and not given the attention they deserve.
I believe the quality of life for the elderly has room for improvement and the burden of disease can be reduced with timely, appropriate and evidence based approaches.
Timely medical care is of essence in early diagnosis and prevention of disease complications which slow down disease progression.
Elderly care involves paying close attention, not only to their physical and medical well being but psychological, emotional, financial and nutritional well being. They sometimes need the simple things like a shoulder to lean on , a ear to talk to ,an avenue to relive their memories, a place they are comfortable to share both their medical and non medical problems.
In home care provides them with this safety net , where they are comfortable and do not feel like a burden to anyone. It allows them the opportunity to have heartfelt conversations and discuss issues they may otherwise be hesitant to, which in turn allows the medical practitioner to identify a disease process in good time and implement a management protocol reducing the need for emergency admissions and future complications.
ELDERLY PEOPLE ARE SPECIAL,DESERVING AND SUPER ADORABLE..... Give them the care they need.
