Continuing our account of black explorers, did you know that the first man to reach the North Pole was not Robert Peary, but an African American man called Matthew Henson? While part of Peary’s expedition, the first group to arrive consisted of one black man, four inuit and not a single white man, with Henson leading the group.
He was hired by Robert Peary at the age of 21 because already then he had travelled more of the World than many of Peary’s fellow members of the National Geographic Society. Henson still has descendants in the Arctic.
