Thank you MOH – Division of Reproductive and Maternal Health for being a close and reliable ally in this endeavour.

There is increased impetus at national and subnational levels for HIV services to be integrated to routine primary care. However, there is limited evidence to guide decision making on the approach, feasibility, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency of such integration.

CHAK and partners in the Evaluation of Integrated Services (EIS) study - University of Nairobi, Division of Non Communicable Diseases – MOH, NASCOP, Kitui, Kiambu and Nairobi counties - came together to validate the project integration package.

The pilot study aims to evaluate the feasibility, systemic requirements, cost implications, and acceptability of integrating HIV and NCDs care in selected facilities, and implement an integration intervention package to respond to evaluation findings from three counties - Kitui, Kiambu and Nairobi counties in Kenya.

The IMARA - Integrated Model for Accessible, Resilient and Accountable Care Package. is a locally driven, evidence-based framework for delivering integrated HIV and non-communicable disease (NCD) care in primary health settings.

The care package shall: I – Institutionalize Standards and Tools, M – Mobilize Capacity and Systems A – Align Service Delivery, R – Review Performance and Quality and A – Anchor Sustainability and Community Ownership.

Recent seismic shifts in the donor funding landscape have put sustainability high on the health sector agenda. The USAID Jamii Tekelezi Programme (UJTP) is leading innovation towards sustainability of high quality HIV/TB prevention and treatment services by implementing the County Mentorship and Transition (CMaT) model. The CMaT model focuses on capacity building and knowledge transfer, empowering county technical teams to lead the epidemic response and reduce dependence on partner and donor technical expertise. UJTP brought together key officials including CASCOs, SCASCOs, CHRIO and PMTCT coordinators from the four project implementation counties of Nyandarua, Embu, Meru and Tharaka Nithi, as well as the program technical leads, to develop a CMaT implementation and monitoring framework that will later be disseminated to the county departments of health. UJTP is implemented by a consortium led by CHAK and incorporating MEDS.

Birth complications including Post Partum Haemorrhage (PPH), eclampsia, sepsis and obstructed labour are major killers of mothers and infants in Kenya. CHAK through the Gates Foundation RMNCAH Project has procured 12 tracer commodities which will be distributed to 100 Member Health Units across 27 counties in Kenya to help in management of these conditions. The commodities procured through MEDS have been purchased at subsidized prices to ensure they are affordable to the patient. To ensure sustainability and availability of the life-saving commodities to all mothers and babies, CHAK Member Health Units implementing the Gates Foundation RMNCAH Project will develop a Revolving Drugs Fund kitty from this initial stock which is expected to grow with continued utilisation.
