CHAK joined fellow faith actors — MEDS, KCCB, SUPKEM, and others — in the Faith-Based Organizations (FBO) Round Table with the visiting U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Delegation, held as part of the U.S. Government’s health diplomacy and Global health strategy efforts. The session provided a valuable platform to deepen dialogue between governments and faith actors, exploring how partnerships can accelerate Universal Health Coverage (UHC), local ownership, and self-reliance.

Discussions cantered on the role of FBOs in Kenya’s health system (G2F2G), how FBOs can integrate with U.S. Government–supported programs to expand access and scale sustainable impact, improving collaboration through Governance, cost efficiency, and accountability and how FBOs can advance the America First Global Health Strategy through innovation, stewardship, and faith-inspired service.

Representing CHAK, Dr. Chris Barasa, General Secretary & CEO, highlighted CHAK’s nearly 100-year legacy of faith-driven health care, reaffirming its commitment to financial, operational, and institutional sustainability while upholding quality, equity, and compassion in care.

Through the CHAK CMaT and IMARA care models we continue to advance sustainability, integration, domestic resource mobilization, and capacity strengthening for Human Resources for Health (HRH) — building a Resilient, people-centred faith health network.

Our partner, MEDS, remains a cornerstone in ensuring last-mile delivery of health products and technologies and is exploring local pharmaceutical manufacturing — a visionary step toward health security and economic empowerment.

As external aid declines, the future of FBOs lies in a graceful transition from aid to trade, developing sustainable, community-anchored models that uphold faith, excellence, and accountability — all to the glory of God.

CEOs of CHAK member hospitals met with SHA, KMPDC and Digital Health Authority (DHA) representatives to discuss challenges in implementation of SHA. The CEOs received updates on Kenya’s digital health transformation, SHA operations and issues identified for resolution, KMPDC regulations and the need to comply with data protection laws. The CEOs challenged the Government agencies on a barrage of issues affecting health service delivery including delayed SHA claims payment which they said had created a cash flow crisis in their institutions, leading to inability to pay salaries and suppliers. Other issues raised during the meeting were high fees and unclear peer review process for missionary doctors, non-responsiveness of the Government agencies to communication by the service providers, SHA E-registration, high rate of claims rejection and the need to form the SHA appeals tribunal, which has been provided for in the law to review rejected claims. The CEOs expressed hope that the Government would identify and implement fast and solid solutions to the myriad challenges they were facing in SHA implementation. Guest House

It was an exciting two days as CEOs of CHAK member hospitals came together for the CHAK Member Health Units CEOs’ Forum 2025. The health care leaders took the opportunity to put their heads together and find solutions to challenges facing their facilities, key among them health care financing, marketing, business re-engineering, partnerships and sustainability. Key takeaways from the forum include the need to demonstrate strategic agility and pursue non-traditional solutions to address the sustainability challenge, especially in the face of the challenges being experienced with SHA payments. The forum also discussed partnerships towards innovative health systems strengthening solutions. CHAK Guest House & Conference Centre CBSL
