What does a partnership for the people look like? It looks like life-saving dialysis care on wheels. In honor of World Kidney Day, BENA CARE KE is proud to have collaborated with the Murang’a County Government to ensure no patient is left behind, regardless of where they live.
As the world marks World Kidney Day, a mobile dialysis unit operating in Murang'a County is offering new hope to patients who previously struggled to access life-saving kidney treatment, serving nearly 200 patients across the county with services closer to their homes.
The truck, equipped with three dialysis machines, medical supplies and personnel, travels to villages and local centres, bringing treatment to patients who previously travelled long distances at significant cost. Each session takes about four hours, with the medical team sometimes working until midnight due to high demand.
Patients like Richard Thuku, diagnosed in 2022, expressed relief at finding accessible care after previously travelling to Nakuru. Beth Njoroge from Gataka-ini said the service reduced her transport costs from Sh4,000 per visit to Sh1,500. Henry Thuko from Giatutu village now attends sessions twice a week since his diagnosis in July 2025.
According to the World Health Organization, an estimated four million Kenyans, about one in ten adults, live with chronic kidney disease, with numbers projected to rise to 4.8 million by 2030. Murang'a County shows a particularly high burden, with about 15 percent of adults showing signs of kidney impairment and cases rising 22% in three years.
Treatment is covered through the Social Health Authority and the county's Kang'ata Care programme, with plans to introduce more units in future.
