Food systems the world over can be more beneficial to society and humanity if we focus on improving equity in the way that the various livelihoods supporting food production, distribution and consumption are positioned to benefit people and their communities as composite units. We need to hear about any and all possible solutions that can make that happen. Here is a recording of the 2nd Public Forum of the UN Food Systems Summit Action Track 4 on Equitable livelihoods in which several of such solutions are presented: https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=119470300063665&ref=watch_permalink

The Open Institute is implementing activities under the Nakuru North Farmers Data Development project as one of the Africa Lead/ CNC Small Grants Program grantees. Through this project Open Institute aims to achieve two main changes in the society: ensuring that government is proactively open as regards its contributions to its business regarding development and to give value to citizen voices - so that citizens have influence in their decision making. Africa is constantly referred to as a continent that is “rising.” The World Bank predicts that in 2018, six out of 10 of the world’s fastest growing economies will be countries in Africa. Economic growth across 55 nations — home to Africa’s nearly 1.2 billion people — is steadily improving. However, not every person is “rising” in the morning with the strength of the continent’s roaring economies. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the rates of undernourishment across the continent are on the rise and Africa’s total undernourished population, 224 million, now represents a quarter of the world’s entire population who are undernourished. It’s projected that our agriculture and agribusiness will grow from $300 million as it is now to be a $1 trillion industry by 2030. In large part, agriculture-led growth will be driven by smallholder farmers, who are 70 percent of the population and the largest private sector group in agriculture. Yet, while the continent has almost half of the world’s fertile land, African nations spend nearly $35 billion on annual food imports. This figure is also “rising,” estimated to reach $110 billion by 2025. Demand for food is also on the rise, set to double by 2050. Dr. Kalibata's advice to young people who are interested in a career in agriculture- via Coleacp

"There are opportunities in Agriculture but you have to be equipped. Agriculture is a skill. It is not something you do because you know how to put seeds in the soil. It is a skill and you have to be prepared to learn the skill based on the commodities, and it varies by commodity, based on the commodity you want to go in; based on the value chain that you want to invest in; based on what you are trying to do. If you want to do mechanization and if you want to supply mechanization services, you have to understand mechanization. Machines break down. How do they get repaired? Where do you get services from? If you want to produce maize, maize requires A,B,C,D. How do you protect
yourself from pests? What is your market? It is a skill and you have to be prepared to learn. It is not something you walk into just because your parents planted maize in the backyard and you are going to plant maize, and agriculture will work for you. It is a skill and these skills have to be acquired, and there are places to acquire these. For example, via the youth virtual learning centre that we are trying to set up, we would be very happy to link youth with sources of skills."
