IFAS in Pregnancy: Why It Is Important for Every Expectant Mother

During pregnancy, a woman’s body needs more nutrients to support the growth and development of the baby. One of the most important supplements given in antenatal clinics is IFAS (Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation).

What is IFAS?

IFAS refers to iron and folic acid tablets given to pregnant women to prevent and treat anemia during pregnancy.

Iron helps the body produce hemoglobin (Hb), which carries oxygen in the blood.

Folic acid helps in the development of the baby’s brain and spinal cord and prevents birth defects.

Health facilities in Kenya usually provide IFAS tablets to pregnant mothers during antenatal care (ANC) visits.

Sources of Iron and Folic Acid in Food

Apart from supplements, pregnant women should also eat foods rich in iron and folate such as:

Iron-rich foods

Red meat and liver

Beans and lentils

Sukuma wiki and spinach

Eggs

Fortified cereals

Folate-rich foods

Green leafy vegetables

Avocados

Oranges and citrus fruits

Beans and peas

Groundnuts

Eating a balanced diet together with IFAS tablets helps prevent anemia.

Importance of Checking Hemoglobin (Hb) in Pregnancy

Checking hemoglobin levels during antenatal visits helps health workers know whether a mother has anemia.

Low Hb can lead to:

Severe tiredness and weakness

Increased risk of infections
Preterm birth
Low birth weight
Increased risk of bleeding during delivery
Early detection allows the healthcare provider to treat anemia early and protect both mother and baby.

Importance of Checking for Pallor
Health workers also check for pallor (paleness) in areas such as:
The inner eyelids
Palms of the hands
Nail beds
Pallor can be a quick sign of anemia, especially in settings where laboratory tests may not be immediately available.

Key Message

Pregnant mothers should:
Attend regular antenatal clinics
Take IFAS tablets as prescribed
Eat iron- and folate-rich foods
Get Hb levels checked regularly
These simple steps help ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Family Planning Methods Available in Kenya

Family planning refers to the use of methods that help individuals or couples decide when to have children and how many children to have. It is an important public health intervention that helps prevent unintended pregnancies, reduces maternal deaths, and improves the health of mothers and children.

In Kenya, several safe and effective family planning methods are available in public hospitals, private facilities, and pharmacies. These methods are broadly grouped into short-term, long-term, permanent, and natural methods.

1. Short-Term (Temporary) Methods
These methods work for a short period and require regular use.

Contraceptive Pills – Taken daily to prevent ovulation and pregnancy.
Injectables – Given 3 months depending on the type.
Male and Female Condoms – Prevent pregnancy and also protect against s*xually transmitted infections (STIs).
Emergency Contraceptive Pills (P2) – Used after unprotected s*x to prevent pregnancy.

2. Long-Acting Reversible Methods (LARC)
These methods prevent pregnancy for several years but fertility returns after removal.
Implants – Small rods inserted under the skin of the arm; they work for 3–5 years.
Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) – Small devices placed in the uterus that can prevent pregnancy for several years.

3. Permanent Methods
These are suitable for people who do not want more children.

Tubal Ligation – A surgical procedure that permanently prevents pregnancy in women.
Vasectomy – A surgical procedure that permanently prevents pregnancy in men.

4. Natural Methods
These methods rely on understanding fertility without using drugs or devices.

Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) – Effective for mothers who are exclusively breastfeeding a baby under 6 months. Does not apply to all mothers and that is why every mother is encouraged to start family planning from the 6th week post delivery.
Fertility Awareness Methods – Tracking fertile days using cycle tracking or observation of body changes.
Withdrawal Method – The male partner withdraws before ej*******on.

✅ Important Message:
Family planning is a personal choice. Before starting any method, it is important to consult a healthcare provider to choose the method that best fits your health, lifestyle, and reproductive goals.

Why Every Mother Should Attend Antenatal Clinic (ANC)

Pregnancy is an important journey that requires proper care for both the mother and the baby. One of the best ways to ensure a healthy pregnancy is by attending antenatal clinic (ANC) regularly. Antenatal care helps monitor the health of the mother, track the growth of the baby, and detect any possible problems early.

During antenatal visits, healthcare providers check the mother’s blood pressure, weight, and overall health. They also monitor the baby’s development and provide important vaccinations such as the tetanus vaccine that protects against Tetanus. These visits also help identify conditions such as Anaemia, Preeclampsia, and Gestational Diabetes early, allowing timely treatment.

Antenatal clinics also provide mothers with essential health education. Expectant mothers learn about proper nutrition, birth preparedness, danger signs during pregnancy, and how to care for themselves and their babies. Health workers also guide mothers on safe delivery and new born care.

Regular ANC visits also help prevent complications and reduce risks for both the mother and the baby. Organizations such as the World Health Organization recommend that pregnant women attend multiple antenatal visits throughout their pregnancy to ensure proper monitoring and support.

Attending antenatal clinic is not just a routine appointment—it is a vital step in protecting the life of both the mother and the baby. If you are pregnant, make sure to attend all your antenatal appointments and encourage other mothers to do the same.

Healthy mothers mean healthy babies and stronger communities.

Tetanus Vaccination During Pregnancy: Protecting Mother and Baby

Pregnancy is an important time for mothers to take steps that protect both their health and the health of their unborn babies. One essential preventive measure is receiving the tetanus vaccine. This vaccine protects against Tetanus, a serious bacterial infection that affects the nervous system and can cause severe muscle spasms, breathing problems, and even death.

Tetanus bacteria are commonly found in soil, dust, and animal waste. They can enter the body through cuts or wounds. During childbirth, both the mother and the new born may be exposed to infection, especially if delivery or cord care is not done under sterile conditions.

When a pregnant woman receives the tetanus vaccine, her body produces protective antibodies that help fight the infection. These antibodies are passed to the baby through the placenta, giving the new born protection during the first weeks of life. This protection is very important because babies are especially vulnerable to Neonatal Tetanus, a dangerous condition that can occur if the umbilical cord becomes infected after birth.

Health organizations such as the World Health Organization recommend tetanus vaccination as part of routine antenatal care. The vaccine is safe for both the mother and the baby and has been used for many years to prevent tetanus-related deaths around the world.

Expectant mothers are encouraged to attend antenatal clinics and receive the recommended tetanus vaccine doses during pregnancy. This simple and effective step helps ensure a safer pregnancy, protects new born, and contributes to healthier families and communities.

Getting vaccinated during pregnancy is not only protecting yourself—it is also giving your baby a healthy and safe start in life.

Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus).
It is mainly caused by persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

🔎 Main Risk Factors
Early s*xual activity
Multiple s*xual partners
Weakened immunity (e.g., HIV)
Not going for regular screening

⚠️ Warning Signs
Abnormal va**nal bleeding (after s*x, between periods, or after menopause)
Foul-smelling va**nal discharge
Pelvic pain
⚠️ Early stages may have no symptoms — that’s why screening is important.

🛡 Prevention
HPV vaccination (especially for girls 9–14 years)
Regular screening (Pap smear or VIA)
Safe s*xual practices

💡 Cervical cancer is preventable and treatable when detected early.
Encourage women and girls around you to get vaccinated and screened.

UTI vs Bacterial Vaginosis: What’s the Difference?

Many women confuse Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) because both can cause discomfort around the private area — but they are NOT the same.
A UTI affects the urinary system (urethra, bladder, or kidneys).

Common symptoms:
Burning sensation when passing urine
Frequent urge to urinate
Lower abdominal pain
Cloudy or strong-smelling urine

👉 It is caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract.
👉 It is treated with antibiotics.

BV affects the va**na, not the urinary system.

Common symptoms:
Thin white or grey va**nal discharge
Fishy va**nal smell (especially after s*x)
Mild itching (sometimes)
Usually NO pain when urinating

👉 It happens when the normal balance of va**nal bacteria is disturbed.
👉 It is also treated with specific antibiotics.

Choosing the Right Health Facility for Delivery 🤰🏽🏥

Preparing for birth is exciting — but choosing where to deliver is just as important as preparing your hospital bag. Here are simple things to consider:

🔹 Distance & Accessibility
Choose a facility that is easy to reach, especially in case of emergency. Consider transport options, road conditions, and travel time — especially at night.

🔹 Previous Obstetric History
Have you had a previous cesarean section? Miscarriage? Preterm birth? Heavy bleeding? Your past pregnancy experiences help determine the level of care you may need.

🔹 Gestation of the Pregnancy
Are you full term? Preterm? Post-date? Some facilities are better equipped to handle premature babies or overdue pregnancies.

🔹 Underlying Medical Conditions
Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or HIV may require a facility with specialized care and emergency support.

🔹 Pregnancy Risks
If your pregnancy is high-risk (twins, breech baby, placenta issues, preeclampsia), choose a hospital with theatre services, blood availability, and newborn care unit.

🔹 Comfort & Confidence
You should feel safe, respected, and comfortable. Consider cleanliness, staff attitude, privacy, and whether a birth companion is allowed.

🔹 Expected Outcome
Think about the level of newborn care available. Does the facility have a newborn unit (NBU)? Can they manage complications if they arise?

✨ A safe delivery starts with good preparation and informed decisions.
