Choosing the Right Health Facility for Delivery 🤰🏽🏥

Preparing for birth is exciting — but choosing where to deliver is just as important as preparing your hospital bag. Here are simple things to consider:

🔹 Distance & Accessibility
Choose a facility that is easy to reach, especially in case of emergency. Consider transport options, road conditions, and travel time — especially at night.

🔹 Previous Obstetric History
Have you had a previous cesarean section? Miscarriage? Preterm birth? Heavy bleeding? Your past pregnancy experiences help determine the level of care you may need.

🔹 Gestation of the Pregnancy
Are you full term? Preterm? Post-date? Some facilities are better equipped to handle premature babies or overdue pregnancies.

🔹 Underlying Medical Conditions
Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or HIV may require a facility with specialized care and emergency support.

🔹 Pregnancy Risks
If your pregnancy is high-risk (twins, breech baby, placenta issues, preeclampsia), choose a hospital with theatre services, blood availability, and newborn care unit.

🔹 Comfort & Confidence
You should feel safe, respected, and comfortable. Consider cleanliness, staff attitude, privacy, and whether a birth companion is allowed.

🔹 Expected Outcome
Think about the level of newborn care available. Does the facility have a newborn unit (NBU)? Can they manage complications if they arise?

✨ A safe delivery starts with good preparation and informed decisions.

Rabies Virus Infection and Post-Exposure Vaccination
Rabies is one of the deadliest viral infections known to humans. Caused by the rabies virus, it is transmitted primarily through the bite or scratch of infected animals—most often dogs. Once the virus reaches the central nervous system and symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. This makes prevention and timely medical intervention absolutely critical.

How Rabies Infection Occurs
The virus enters the body through saliva from an infected animal.
It travels along nerves toward the brain.
Early symptoms may include fever, headache, and tingling at the bite site.
As the disease progresses, neurological signs such as agitation, hydrophobia (fear of water), and paralysis appear.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
Fortunately, rabies infection can be prevented if treatment begins promptly after exposure. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is the medical protocol used to stop the virus before it reaches the nervous system.

PEP typically includes:
Immediate wound care: Thorough washing of the bite or scratch with soap and water.
Rabies immune globulin (RIG): Provides immediate antibodies to neutralize the virus at the wound site.
Rabies vaccine series: A set of four doses given over two weeks to stimulate the body’s own immune response.
DAY 0, DAY 3, DAY 7, DAY 14

Timing Matters
PEP should be started as soon as possible—ideally within 24 hours of exposure. However, even if there is a delay, vaccination is still recommended as long as symptoms have not yet appeared.

🌸 CERVICAL CANCER & THE CANCER VACCINE: WHAT EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women in Kenya — yet it is one of the most preventable.
The main cause of cervical cancer is a virus called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a very common virus that is spread through s*xual contact. Most people get exposed to it at some point in their lives — often without knowing.
Certain high-risk types of HPV can cause changes in the cervix that may develop into cancer over time if not detected and treated early.

💉 The HPV Vaccine (Cervical Cancer Vaccine)
The HPV vaccine protects against the high-risk types of HPV that cause most cases of cervical cancer.

It is:
✔ Safe
✔ Effective
✔ Approved globally
✔ Available in Kenya

The vaccine works best before exposure to the virus.

👧 Vaccination for Girls Aged 10–14 Years
The Kenyan Ministry of Health recommends:

👉 All girls aged 10–14 years should receive the HPV vaccine.
This age group is targeted because:

The immune response is strongest at this age.
Most girls have not yet been exposed to HPV.
It provides long-term protection before adulthood.
This vaccine protects your daughter’s future.

👩 Can Women in Reproductive Age Be Vaccinated?
Yes.
Women in reproductive age can also receive the HPV vaccine after testing and confirming they do not have the high-risk HPV infection.

However:
The vaccine does NOT treat existing HPV infection.
It prevents future infection with high-risk strains.

Even vaccinated women still need routine screening.
🧪 Cervical Cancer Screening is Still Important
Vaccination does not replace screening.

Women should undergo:

HPV testing
Pap smear
Or VIA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid)
Regular screening helps detect early changes before cancer develops.
Early detection saves lives.

⚠️ Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Early stages may have no symptoms.

Advanced symptoms may include:

Abnormal vaginal bleeding (between periods, after s*x, or after menopause)
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
Pelvic pain
Pain during s*xual in*******se
Do not ignore abnormal bleeding.

🌍 Why This Matters in Kenya
Cervical cancer is:
One of the leading causes of cancer deaths among Kenyan women.
Often diagnosed late.
Preventable through vaccination and screening.
Prevention is better than treatment.

🌸 Protect Yourself. Protect Your Daughter.

✔ Vaccinate girls 10–14 years
✔ Screen regularly
✔ Seek medical advice if you notice abnormal symptoms
✔ Talk openly about reproductive health

At Afya na Malezi Consultants, we believe prevention is power

U = U: What Kenyans Need to Know About HIV and Viral Load

U = U means Undetectable = Untransmittable. This is an important public health message in HIV prevention and care in Kenya.
When a person living with HIV takes their ARVs (antiretroviral drugs) correctly every day, the amount of HIV in their blood—called the viral load—reduces to very low levels. When the viral load becomes undetectable, it means the virus is so low that it cannot be passed to another person through s*x.

A person with HIV who has an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIV to their s*xual partner.

This does not mean HIV is cured. HIV is still in the body, but it is well controlled. To maintain U = U, one must:
Take ARVs daily without missing doses
Attend clinic appointments
Do regular viral load tests as advised (usually every 6–12 months)

U = U is good news for families, couples, and communities. It supports:

Healthy relationships and marriages
Safe conception and pregnancy
Reduced HIV stigma and discrimination
This message encourages early HIV testing, immediate treatment, and adherence to care, which are key goals of Kenya’s HIV response.

📌 Remember:

ARVs work
Viral load suppression protects partners
People living with HIV can live long, healthy lives
Let us support one another, fight stigma, and promote treatment as prevention.

Understanding the Antenatal Profile: Tests Every Pregnant Woman Should Know

Antenatal care is more than clinic visits—it’s about early detection, prevention, and protecting both mother and baby. One of the most important parts of ANC is the antenatal profile, a group of routine tests done early in pregnancy and repeated when necessary. Here’s what each test means and why it matters 👇

🩸 HB (Hemoglobin)
This test checks for anemia.
Low HB can cause fatigue, infections, preterm birth, and excessive bleeding during delivery.
Early detection allows timely iron and folic acid supplementation.

🧬 Blood Group & Rhesus Factor
Knowing your blood group helps in case of bleeding or transfusion.
Rhesus (Rh) negative mothers may need Anti-D injection to prevent complications in current or future pregnancies.

🦠 HIV Test
Early testing allows:
Immediate initiation of ART
Prevention of mother-to-child transmission

🧫 Syphilis Test
Untreated syphilis can lead to:
Miscarriage
Stillbirth
Congenital infections

🍬 Blood RBS (Random Blood Sugar)
Screens for gestational diabetes (GDM).
Helps prevent maternal complications like pre-eclampsia and C/S
Protects the baby from macrosomia and neonatal hypoglycemia

🫁 TB Screening
Pregnancy lowers immunity, increasing TB risk.
Early detection and treatment improve pregnancy outcomes
Reduces transmission to the newborn

🧪 Urinalysis
Checks for:
Protein → pre-eclampsia, kidney disease
Glucose → gestational diabetes
Blood → infection or renal problems
pH → urinary health
