YEAST INFECTIONS
Yeast infections usually occur in warm, moist parts of the body, such as the mouth and moist areas of skin. When they cause an infection in the va**na, it is known as vulvova**nal candidiasis. Vaginal yeast infections are common among growing girls. About 75% of all females have a yeast infection at some point in their lives.
Vaginal yeast infections can cause pain, itching, redness, a thick white va**nal discharge, pain during urination, and sometimes whitish patches on the skin of the va**nal area. In most cases, yeast infections can be prevented by keeping the va**nal area clean and dry.
If your daughter has a va**nal yeast infection, her doctor can prescribe proper treatment that can clear up the symptoms in a couple of days and cure the infection within a week.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis cause symptoms that are nonspecific, which means that aside from the yeast infection, other conditions can cause the identical symptoms. The most common symptom of a va**nal yeast infection is itching in the va**nal and/or vulvar area. Other symptoms of va**nal yeast infection and vulvitis include:
burning,
soreness,
pain during in*******se and/or urination, and
va**nal discharge. (Vaginal discharge is not always present, but when it occurs, the discharge is odorless and typically has a whitish, thick appearance and texture, like cottage cheese.)
CAUSES
aginal yeast infections occur when new yeast is introduced into the va**nal area, or when there is an increase in the quantity of yeast already present in the va**na relative to the quantity of normal bacteria. For example, when the normal, protective bacteria are eradicated by antibiotics (taken to treat a urinary tract, respiratory, or other types of infection) or by immunosuppressive drugs, the yeast can multiply, invade tissues, and cause irritation of the lining of the va**na (vaginitis).
