Sound waves are emitted through the transducer (the probe that's placed on your chest), the waves bounce off your heart and create a moving image of it on a screen. This allows your doctor to look at the anatomy of your heart from many different angles and to watch your heart rhythm.

Important Medical instances where Echo is Extremely Important

Patients on Followup for Hypertension and Diabetes- Patients with long standing history of Hypertension and diabetes must have an echo atleast once a year.

Patients with features of Heart Failure- All patients who presents with signs/and symptoms of Heart failure must receive an echo. This helps to determine the cause.

Patients with Heart murmurs- Echo helps to determine the cause

Patients with suspected Congenital heart disease

Patients with suspected Infective endocarditis

All patients who are ASOT reactive (Rheumatic fever) must receive a baseline echo.

Patients with suspected pericardial effusion

Patients with cardiac shadow abnormality on Chest x-ray

Patients with abnormal ECG findings

Cardiac evaluation for patients with known or suspected cardiac disease, prior to surgery

Cancer patients ,prior to Chemotherapy, Half way into treatment and after Chemo sessions to evaluate for possible cardiotoxicity.
