H.PYLORI, THE BACTERIA IN YOUR STOMACH THAT CAN CAUSE ULCERS

Ever heard people say “najua ni ulcers” every time the stomach acts up? 🤔

Well… one of the biggest culprits behind that is something called H. pylori.

🦠 What is H. pylori?
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that lives in the stomach lining.
It’s one of the most common infections worldwide—many people have it without even knowing.

😬 How does someone get it?
This bacteria is usually spread through:
-Eating contaminated food
-Drinking unsafe water
-Poor hygiene (not washing hands)
-Sharing utensils or saliva (yes, even that “taste my food” habit 👀)

⚠️ What does it do in the stomach?
H. pylori damages the protective lining of your stomach.
Once that lining is weakened:
Acid starts irritating the stomach wall
This leads to gastritis (inflammation)
Over time → ulcers (vidonda vya tumbo)
If untreated for long → can increase risk of stomach cancer

🚨 Signs & Symptoms
Some people have no symptoms at all. But when it shows up:
-Burning stomach pain (especially when hungry)
-Bloating and excessive gas
-Frequent burping
-Nausea or vomiting
-Loss of appetite
-Weight loss
-Black stools or vomiting blood (this is serious ⚠️)

🏥 How is it diagnosed?
Doctors may use:
Stool test (very common and simple)
Breath test
Blood test
Endoscopy (camera to check inside the stomach for ulcers)

💊 Treatment (Very important!)
H. pylori is treatable and curable.
Treatment usually includes:
Antibiotics (to kill the bacteria)
Acid-reducing drugs (to help the stomach heal)

👉🏽 Important:
Finish the full dose even if you feel better halfway.
Stopping early = bacteria comes back stronger.

🛡️ Prevention
Wash hands before eating 🍽️
Drink clean, safe water 💧
Eat well-cooked food
Avoid sharing utensils unnecessarily
Seek treatment early when symptoms start

⚡ Real Talk
That “small stomach discomfort” you keep ignoring or treating with random drugs from the chemist?
It could be H. pylori slowly damaging your stomach.
Don’t normalize pain. Get checked.

UMBILICAL HERNIA.

That “little bump” on your baby’s tummy button? Let’s talk about it 👶🏾

Ever noticed a soft swelling around your child’s navel, especially when they cry, cough, or laugh loudly? That’s most likely an umbilical hernia—and before you panic, let’s break it down in a simple way 👇🏾

💡 What is an umbilical hernia?
It’s when a small part of the intestine or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the baby’s abdominal muscles at the belly button (umbilicus). That’s why you see that bulge popping out.

🤔 How does it come about?
Before a baby is born, they receive nutrients through the umbilical cord. After birth, the opening where the cord passed is supposed to close on its own.
Sometimes, that opening doesn’t fully close—leaving a small gap where tissue can push through.

👉 It’s more common in:
Premature babies
Low birth weight babies
Some African children (very common and usually harmless)

😟 Should I be worried?
Most of the time… NO.
Umbilical hernias in children are usually:
✔️ Painless
✔️ Soft
✔️ Not dangerous
And the good news?
👉 They often close on their own by the time the child is 2–5 years old.

⚠️ When can it be a problem?
Although rare, complications can happen if the hernia gets trapped (we call this incarceration). Watch out for:
🚨 Swelling becomes hard and painful
🚨 Baby cries excessively when you touch it
🚨 Vomiting
🚨 The bulge doesn’t go back in
👉 If you see these signs, please rush to the hospital.

🛠️ How is it managed?
Most cases just need patience and observation 👀
✔️ No need for coins, bandages, or tying cloth (please avoid these old myths 🙅🏾‍♂️)
✔️ Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider
👉 Surgery is only needed if:
It doesn’t close by age 4–5
It becomes very large
Complications develop

❤️ Final word
That small “outie” belly button is usually nothing to lose sleep over. In most cases, it’s just a phase your child will outgrow naturally.
So next time your baby cries and that bump shows up, just smile and say:
“Ahh, there goes the little balloon again 😄”

Health tip:
When in doubt, always let a qualified healthcare provider examine your child for reassurance.

“Fingering” – harmless fun or a hidden health risk?

Before you say “Ahh, it’s just fingers, what could possibly go wrong?”… let’s break it down.

💅 The Risks (Yes, they exist!)
👉 Infections Your fingers touch everything—phones, money, door handles… even that nyama choma 😅
If they’re not clean, you can introduce bacteria or fungi into the va**na, leading to infections like:
Yeast infections
Bacterial infections

👉 Micro-tears (tiny injuries) Long or rough nails can cause small cuts inside the va**na. You may not see them, but they can:
Cause pain
Increase risk of infections

👉 Spread of STIs If fingers have been in contact with infected fluids (yours or your partner’s), infections like Herpes Simplex Virus or Human Papillomavirus can still be passed.

👉 Irritation & discomfort Aggressive “DJ skills” down there can leave someone feeling sore instead of satisfied 😅

🧼 Precautions (Let’s be responsible adults now)
✔️ Wash your hands properly Soap + water = peace of mind. Not vibes only.
✔️ Trim and file nails No one wants internal scratches. This is not a catfight.
✔️ Be gentle This is not a speed competition. Slow and comfortable wins.
✔️ Use protection if needed Finger cots or gloves can reduce risk, especially with new partners.
✔️ Avoid if there are cuts or infections If your fingers have wounds or if either partner has an infection—pause the mission 🚫

Reality check:
You can’t be using the same hands you just used to scroll TikTok, count money, or fix a car engine… then suddenly switch to “romantic mode” without washing them. Please 😭

❤️ Bottom line:
It can be safe and enjoyable… but hygiene and gentleness are KEY.
Let’s normalize having these conversations—because good health also includes what happens behind closed doors 😉

On this day (March 24, 1882), Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the germ that causes tuberculosis (TB). A century later, in 1982, the global health community recognized March 24 as World TB Day.

Each year, we commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on March 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic.

The official theme for World Tuberculosis Day 2026 is:
“Yes! We Can End TB: Led by countries, powered by people.”

Mimi siwezi enda hospitali mapema nikapimwepimwe ndio hiyo cord imehang na hajui hatari yake.

One of the reasons we conduct va**nal examinations in labour is to diagnose this and intervene promptly.

If this happens, kanungo stops immediately and theatre takes over. This is not the time to bargain, give more time or wait for the spouse to come and sign. It is not the time to consult your religious leader or rebuke Satan.
It's the time to cooperate and do as exactly as instructed. Including assuming some weird positions. Under this circumstances, time is of assence

When her labour started, they said, “It’s still early.”

When she complained of headache and swelling, they said, “It’s normal in pregnancy.”💥

When the bleeding began, they said, “Let’s wait and see.”💥

They waited.😿

She didn’t survive.💔

This is how many maternal deaths happen —💯

quietly, at home, surrounded by people who cared but didn’t act fast enough.💫

Maternal mortality is not only a hospital problem.💭

It is a community problem.💬

The public saves lives when we do simple things:

💥Encourage women to attend clinic early

💥Take danger signs seriously

💥Help her reach a health facility immediately

💥Check on her emotionally, not just physicallyAnd men — your presence matters.

Your urgency, your decisions, your support can save a life.

Pregnancy is not a test of endurance.🗨

Waiting is not wisdom.💢

Silence is not care.💭

💥If you have ever insisted on a clinic visit,

💥 helped with transport,

💥checked on a new mother,

💥or spoken up when something felt wrong —

you are already part of the solution.💯

❤️Saving mothers doesn’t start in the hospital.
It starts with us.❤️

👉 What’s one thing we can do better as a community?

The HPV vaccine is typically recommended for:
- Girls and boys aged 11-12 years (can start as early as 9)

The vaccine is most effective when given before becoming exposed to the hpv

- Teens and young adults up to age 26 who haven't been vaccinated yet

*Update update update *....................................
Kenya has switched to a single-dose HPV vaccine schedule, which is expected to increase vaccine coverage and accelerate efforts to eliminate cervical cancer.

The Ministry of Health announced the change in October 2025, citing local data showing that one dose offers sufficient protection against the virus responsible for most cervical cancer cases ¹ ² ³.

The rollout of the single-dose vaccine is already underway, with the Ministry of Health planning to implement it nationwide
Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth stated that the change will enable the ministry to reach more girls, especially in underserved areas, and make it easier for families to complete the vaccination schedule ³

Ethical dilemma is real when you work in a hospital and live in the village where you grew up or where you constantly and openly interact with village-mates. I remember when I used to work in the hospital, particularly in the HIV/AIDS CCC, I saw a number of people from my village who were coming for the clinic but I had to "pretend" that I don't know them even when some tried to call me by my "village name". Then back in the village, I felt ethically conflicted when I saw a girl/woman that I know going with a man that has been "lectured" severally by the CCC nurses for HIV medication non-adherence. It's unethical and unprofessional to disclose someone's HIV status to third parties but at the same time you feel kinda guilty when you see someone you know (including friends, a family member) unknowingly almost getting into intimate relationship with an infected person who is not adhering to medication, nutrition, and lifestyle advice. for my village folks ensure kitu ya kwanza you 2 get tested, and for the "infected", take medications religiously and check of your nutrition and lifestyle and ultimately you won't transmit the virus to your partner. Kwa hayo yote, ethical dilemma is real.
