Coming up well...

The 60-bed capacity Newborn Unit is steadily rising from the ground, with construction crews working tirelessly on site to deliver the project on schedule.

Construction is within timeline, with the structural frame almost complete.

This 60 million shillings investment, supported by Safaricom’s M-PESA Foundation, will significantly ease pressure on the current newborn unit, which has been stretched beyond capacity.

A major step forward for better neonatal care and healthier beginnings.

FROM CANADA TO LAIKIPIA: ROTARY WORLD HELP SUPPORTS NTRH

Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital today received a significant consignment of medical supplies from Canada-based Rotary World Help, marking a major boost to patient care.

The container shipment includes a wide range of equipment for use across all hospital departments, with a significant focus on patient mobility aids, including wheelchairs, crutches, walking frames, and walking sticks, among other essential items.

The support was made possible through the generous partnership of Rotary World Help Canada, working through Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

While receiving the donation, hospital CEO Dr. Sammy Kilonzo described it as a timely and impactful contribution, noting that acquiring similar equipment would have taken the hospital several budget cycles due to competing priorities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Rotary World Help Canada for this generous gesture. While NTRH will serve as the anchor beneficiary, the equipment will also be shared with other health facilities across Laikipia County where the need is greatest, according to LHS Chief Officer Dr. Timothy Panga.

Rotary World Help is a Canada-based charitable initiative of Rotary Clubs that collects and redistributes medical equipment and supplies to support healthcare systems in underserved communities around the world.

PROFESSIONAL OVERSIGHT VISIT

We today received officials from the Kenya Health Professions Oversight Authority (KHPOA) during an oversight visit to assess our hospital’s status as an accredited internship training centre.

The visit aimed to familiarise the team with internship placement centres, assess the adequacy of training facilities, review adherence to professional standards, and understand coordination and reporting mechanisms for interns. This engagement formed part of the regulator’s North Rift regional tour.

The officials were briefed on the hospital’s preparedness to continue receiving interns for post-school placements as they progress towards licensing.

The delegation was received by the hospital management team led by Dr. Sammy Kilonzo, who reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing maximum support and upholding high standards of quality training.

OVER 40 CHILDREN GRADUATE FROM PMTCT

Today, more than 40 children successfully ‘graduate’ from our Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) program — a major milestone for the children, their families, and our community.

This achievement comes after two years of dedicated follow-up, during which mothers and their babies received continuous HIV testing, treatment support, and clinical monitoring to ensure the children remained HIV-free.

Advances in HIV research and treatment have transformed PMTCT care. What was once a complex and difficult process has evolved into safe, effective, and manageable treatment plans that protect infants throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

But scientific progress alone isn’t enough. The commitment of mothers makes this success possible. Medication works only when taken consistently, and these mothers demonstrated remarkable strength and adherence — supported by peers who helped them navigate the emotional and practical challenges along the journey.

A successful PMTCT program requires partnership: mothers, healthcare workers, community support groups, and proven medical interventions all working together. Today’s graduation is not just a ceremony — it is a powerful reminder of how far we have come and what is possible for future generations.

This is a significant milestone, especially considering that decades ago, effective PMTCT services did not exist. Today, we celebrate healthy children, empowered mothers, and a future full of hope.

MORE OXYGEN SUPPORT TO NTRH

NTRH is pleased to receive a new consignment of oxygen support accessories from the Ministry of Health, as part of the post–COVID-19 Oxygen Support Programme.

The 3.3 million shillings shipment includes 104 oxygen flow meters, three patient monitors and one oxygen analyser. These accessories will be used to strengthen oxygen delivery systems across critical and general wards, enhance patient monitoring, and ensure accurate measurement of oxygen purity and flow — ultimately improving patient care and safety.

This initiative is supported by Global Health and implemented by Amref Health Africa.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of Laikipia Health Service, County Director of Health Services Dr. Waihenya Mwangi expressed appreciation, noting:
“This support has come to the right people at the right time. It is often challenging to make decisions amid competing priorities.”
Hospital CEO Dr. Sammy Kilonzo added that the support will significantly enhance patient care and free up resources for other urgent priorities.

Together, we continue to strengthen healthcare systems and improve service delivery for our communities.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN ACTION! HAPPY WORLD OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DAY 2025

Today, we proudly join the world in celebrating World Occupational Therapy Day — a special occasion to honour the incredible contribution of this vital branch of healthcare in restoring independence, confidence, and quality of life for individuals, families, and communities.

This vibrant celebration brought together our hospital leadership, the Rehabilitative Department, and families who shared moving stories of recovery — stories of hope restored, strength rediscovered, and milestones achieved even when the journeys once seemed impossible.

From helping children overcome challenges like clubfoot and delayed mobility milestones, to supporting adults as they rebuild their lives after trauma, occupational therapy walks quietly beside patients every step of the way — empowering them to thrive again.

James Ekaale, our Lead Occupational Therapist, shared how these family stories continue to inspire him:

“Their courage gives me the strength to keep serving humanity,” he says. We aim to raise more awareness to capture more deserving patients who are still out there.”

Dr. Sammy Kilonzo, CEO, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to expanding the department and deepening its impact:

“When even one or two patients take the time to share their gratitude, we know there are countless others who we have impacted,” he said, and asked the families to be the ambassadors of hope in the communities.

Today, we celebrate every occupational therapist and the countless lives they transform — one step, one story, one renewed hope at a time.

AMS SUPPORT: GLOBAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP VISITS TO ASSESS PROGRESS

Earlier today, a team from the Global Health Partnership conducted a monitoring visit to assess the progress of the Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) program.

The visit aimed to evaluate the sustainability of efforts promoting the rational use of medicines — a crucial step in the fight against antimicrobial resistance caused by the misuse of drugs.

This visit also assessed NTRH-Dharura’s readiness to sustain and scale up the program through ongoing support and partnerships.

The AMS program champions the One Health approach — a multidisciplinary model that brings together stakeholders in human health, animal health, and environmental sectors. The shared goal: to promote the responsible use of medicines and curb drug misuse.

In Laikipia, where mixed farming is common, both human and animal medicines are in frequent use. This intersection makes it a critical point for coordinated action in antimicrobial stewardship.

Through continued training and capacity building, local AMS champions are being empowered to lead change in their communities.
