NTRH RECEIVES, INDUCTS INTERNS FROM MINISTRY OF HEALTH

NTRH is pleased to announce the successful induction of interns received from the Ministry of Health. The three-day event formally onboards the 74 interns for a 12-month period, which, upon success, will grant them the license to practice independently. They include 16, 26, and 32 medical, nursing, and clinical officer interns, respectively.

The interns, the largest cohort ever posted to the hospital, went through an immersive experience as they interacted with the consultants and team leads from all departments, who briefed them on the expectations during their stay.

The exercise orients the new team to the hospital patient care standards, policies, and departmental workflows, which will help them navigate the rotations with ease. They were also briefed on the concern of antimicrobial resistance, an emerging threat in healthcare.

More importantly, the orientation emphasized on all-around mentorship on leadership, teamwork, communication and integrity, in addition to building a healthy social life.

The rotations will also include exposure to the primary care levels for experience of the broader public health organization.

Let’s welcome the new team and wish them a fulfilling stay in Nanyuki.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW SPECIALISTS’ CLINICS

We are excited to announce that our Specialists’ Clinics have finally relocated to this new building. This step is in line with our sustained quest to raise the bar in patient care in our growth plan.

This building, part of the county government's sprawling investment in the hospital, marks a milestone in the continued improvement of the facility's many service points. It puts an end to the ‘outdoor clinics’, with patients now shielded from the weather elements.

Clients and staff can now experience the comfort of using this new facility that has a better waiting area, expanded consultation and procedure rooms and a dedicated triage and registry area to meet the ever-growing demand. A complete sanitation block for staff and clients adds convenience.

“This change reflects our commitment to providing our patients with the best possible care in a more serene environment,” CEO Dr. Sammy Kilonzo said in a memo to staff.

Privileged to receive medical equipment support from the Batuk Spouses and Braeburn School, Nanyuki, as part of the institutions’ community support initiatives.

The items include a modern wheelchair to ease the movement of mothers in the maternity wing, and neonatal SpO2 probes for the emergency department. The probes were immediately deployed to the emergency room to attend to a neonate.

Neonatal SpO2 probes offer continuous monitoring of oxygen concentration for newborns and paediatrics to provide early warning signs of respiratory distress or insufficient oxygenation.
The specialized medical devices are critical in neonatal care to monitor oxygenation and detect hypoxia (insufficient oxygen reaching the blood tissues) or other respiratory issues. They are specially designed to fit the smaller anatomy of babies.
Every support counts.

NTRH welcomes such community partnerships to improve care outcomes for the patients.

SCORES VOLUNTEER AT THINGITHU SCHOOL BLOOD DRIVE

Students from the neighbouring Thingithu Secondary School participate in a blood donation exercise ahead of World Blood Donor Day 2025 (Saturday, June 14th).

The school community, in a heartfelt demonstration of kindness, rallied efforts that resulted in the donation of 48 pints of blood —a life-saving gesture that gives others a second chance at life.
The improving turnout points to a rapidly transforming blood donation culture in the communities, giving hope to individuals in need, their families and the communities.

A special thank you Thingithu Secondary School for hosting us and to everyone who donated or made the exercise a success. A special thank you goes to the staff who made the exercise a great success.
Nanyuki Blood Satellite, in partnership with the Red Cross and volunteers, will pitch tents around town in the coming days for a similar exercise. Let us continue to make a difference, one drop at a time.

NEW ADVANCED AMBULANCE, STAFF ABSORPTION INITIATED AS NTRH CONTINUES TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY

NTRH has officially received its first advanced life support under the support ambulance of the County Government today, as part of the broader effort to modernize the patient referral logistics.

H.E. Governor Hon. Joshua Irungu, EGH flagged off the new acquisition, a 16.85 million-shilling Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance to ease referrals for the critically ill patients. The shared Doldol Sub County Hospital is now released to cover a smaller geographical area.

The ALS ambulance has more capabilities that include, a ventilator to support breathing, suction machines to clear fluids and secretions in the airway, a heart monitor to observe the pulse and a defibrillator to restore normal heart rhythms for patients with a heart attack.

The event also saw the absorption of the 28 County UHC Contract staff who have worked for close to five years under sub-optimal terms and their translation into Permanent and Pensionable Establishment. This will be followed by a broader human resource intervention towards holistic reforms in the service.

FROM THE CME: UNDERSTANDING DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Did you now that diabetic retinopathy- a complication of diabetes-is a leading cause of blindness among the working adults?

The weekly education session takes us to the Eye Department, where the consultant ophthalmologist and team takes us through diabetic retinopathy, a condition that leads to vision loss if unchecked.

This condition is caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This damage can lead to vision loss and even blindness if not detected and treated early.

Diabetic retinopathy may not cause any noticeable symptoms in the early stages, making it important to have regular eye exams.

Take advantage of the daily NTRH Eye Clinic for the regular important regular checkups.

NTRH STRATEGIC PLAN ENTERS DRAFT STAGE

The NTRH Strategic Plan 2025-2030 entered the draft stage yesterday, marking a crucial milestone in the journey towards delivering the document that will guide the hospital's growth over the next five years.

The exercise is the culmination of a weeklong, highly engaging workshop that brought together all the hospital competencies and the leadership on a platform to voice their aspirations towards a shared vision of excellence in healthcare. The workshop identified priorities and timelines in support of the broader vision of attaining a Level Five status in infrastructure and service range.

The draft will be reviewed by the hospital management and board in the coming days, as well as disseminated to key stakeholders in county leadership, before a public launch later in the year.

To ensure adaptability and sustainability, the plan aligns the hospital's aspirations with the broader county and national strategic development policies and goals.

This strategic plan leverages existing hospital data sets to identify human resource gaps, emerging medical trends, and cost drivers, among others, to maximize operational efficiency through innovation.

Top on the extensive cost-cutting measures include renewable energy alternatives and extensive rainwater harvesting to cut costs.

NTRH READIES TO PRODUCE NEXT STRATEGIC PLAN

NTRH has today convened a meeting to shape the next strategic plan for 2025 to 2029. The new document succeeds the current one, which expires mid this year.

Hospital CEO Dr. Sammy Kilonzo led the conception meeting bringing together all the departments to chart a way forward and offer insights to be captured in this key hospital document.

This ambitious five-year strategic plan seeks to include inputs from a wide range of stakeholders to ensure a responsive plan. It will incorporate views from wide-ranging stakeholders from the catchment community to the corporate world.

Most importantly, this plan will guide the hospital's priorities in response to a rapidly transforming sector and emerging challenges in funding through innovation.

The next phase will include workshops and interviews with different stakeholders to capture the short and long-term aspirations to transform the hospital.

WORLD KIDNEY DAY 2025

Are your kidneys okay? Detect early, protect kidney health.

NTRH joins the world in observing World Kidney Day, but with a grim reality: the number of patients presenting with chronic kidney disease (late stage) is alarming.

From dialysing patients four days a week to six days, the recent sharp rise of patients with kidney failure at NTRH is cause for worry. The renal unit now serves 55 patients, up from 38 at a similar period last year. Majority are patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or both- mostly linked to the foods taken by the communities in the region.

The numbers are now a public health concern, as they are overstretching resources owing to the expensive and complex nature of therapies each patient needs.
Everyone needs to know about kidney disease, but especially if you have any one of the five risk factors – diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity or a family history of kidney disease. Knowing you're at risk is the first step towards healthier living.

This year focuses on early detection of kidney disease, emphasizing the importance of understanding risk factors, timely testing for at-risk populations, and early intervention to prevent costly complications.
