Yesterday 14th January 2023....was such a historic moment in the Arch Diocese of Nyeri-Kenya in Kiamuiru parish.
Being one of the professionals (Occupational Therapist) who walks the journey of life serving people with different types of disabilities from as early as in the newborn units in our Health Facilities by doing early neonatal screening for disabilities, prevention, managent and correction where possible ...and walking the journey of life with people with disabilities untill adulthood seeing them living an independent and productive life in the society by teaching different adaptive skills approach, use of technology and doing various workplace, home and environmental modifications so as to ensure inclusivity and easy functioning of our dear clients ......at the same time serving in church Liturgy as a choir member .......
I lack words words to express my joy to Archbishop Muheria of the Arch Diocese of Nyeri...being the first Archbishop in Kenya under the Catholic church to embrace inclusivity by ordaining the now Rev Fr. Michael Mithamo King'ori despite him having a visual impairment.
Rev Fr. Mithamo was trained in Braile use and at the same time accorded the Braille missal that he will be using.
Bishop Muheria went ahead and stated the ," Fr Mithamo' s impairment will not hinder him from serving God.
I was more jubilated when Bishop insisted on sponsoring the training of our priests in Sign language so that they can be of better service to the ,"Hard of hearing ," in our congregations."
Bishop.....let this reach you...some of us if not all of our Healthcare workers and special teachers have trained in Sign Language......but we fail to sign to our dear fellow christians in churches because the issue has never been raised.
Positively I embrace it and so let the church leadership determine if there's any hard of hearing so that we can all flow together during sermons and as well create a conducive and all inclusive environment for all christians .
Congratulations Rev Fr Michael Mithamo King'ori.
inclusivity.
