Farmers remain at the heart of what we do at Blossom Health Essentials.

We’re constantly looking for opportunities to strengthen their capacity and improve productivity across the cassava value chain.

The Africa International Agricultural Expo was one such opportunity. It was a space to explore innovations and partnerships that can make mechanization more accessible for smallholder farmers.

🌟 5 years of resilience, growth, and impact 🌾

In February 2020, I had just finished setting up our processing plant. My dream of running my own flour production facility was finally on track. I was eagerly waiting for my dream packaging material, and by March, everything was set to go.

Then, on March 12, 2020, Kenya reported its first COVID-19 case. Everything changed.

🚫 My packaging was never delivered (to this day), despite paying a huge sum.
🚪 Shops shut down with our stock.
📉 Invoices went unpaid.
💔 Goods were lost.

But we kept going! 💪

The past five years have been a journey of grinding, pivoting, creating, and impacting farmers’ lives. Being nominated for the Women in Manufacturing (WIM) Awards this year was a blessing - proof of our resilience and commitment to making healthy living affordable, accessible, and fun! 🎉

Entrepreneurship is tough, and in Kenya, it is a vicious double- edged sword. While the government plans to import chapati-making machines, let’s not forget that Kenya relies on importing 92% of its wheat, producing only 8%. Imagine the difference if we revived the wheat value chain; creating a steady supply for 1,000,000 chapos daily.

Did you also know it’s easier to go through the KEBS certification process as an importer than as a local manufacturer?

We still have a long way to go on our transformation journey, but it starts with supporting local businesses and building our own supply chains. Let's get there!
