Salt Is Best for Your Health?
Nowadays, many types of salt are available in the market—white salt, rock salt, black salt, sea salt, etc. But the real question is: which one is best for our health?
Let’s understand it in simple terms.
⚪ 1. Iodized White Salt (Refined Salt)
This is the most commonly used salt.
Benefits:
Contains iodine, which is essential for the thyroid
Helps prevent iodine deficiency in the body
Easily available and affordable
Drawbacks:
Due to heavy processing, it contains fewer natural minerals
Excess consumption may increase blood pressure
🪨 2. Rock Salt (Sendha Namak)
This is a natural salt and is less processed.
Benefits:
Contains several natural minerals
Considered good for digestion
Commonly used during fasting
Drawbacks:
Does not contain iodine
Using it exclusively may lead to iodine deficiency
⚫ 3. Black Salt (Kala Namak)
Known especially for its taste and digestive benefits.
Benefits:
Helps with gas and indigestion
Enhances the taste of salads, fruits, and snacks
Drawbacks:
Does not contain iodine
Not suitable for regular cooking
🌊 4. Sea Salt
Made from evaporated seawater.
Benefits:
Less processed
Contains some natural minerals
Drawbacks:
May lack iodine
Purity can vary across brands.
So, which salt is the best?
For daily use, the best option is: Iodized salt (refined iodized salt)
Because it provides the necessary iodine your body needs.
You can occasionally use rock salt or black salt for taste and digestion, but they should not completely replace iodized salt.
Note
Too much salt—of any kind—is harmful
According to the WHO, you should not consume more than about 5 grams (one teaspoon) of salt per day.
Each type of salt has its own benefits, but balance is the key.
Use iodized salt in your daily meals, and keep other salts for occasional or special use.
