Foodborne diseases threaten children's health in low-income urban areas, where caregivers often lack resources and knowledge for proper food hygiene. Understanding these challenges is crucial for effective interventions. Noah Okumu discusses our work at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) which quantified occurrence of foodborne diseases in young children (6-24 months), identified factors that could expose their food to these pathogens (diseases) in home environments, local marketplace, as well as production and supply chains. This information was used to design an intervention, which was implemented and evaluated.
We are excited to present the findings of our proof-of-concept trial which provides initial evidence for a Community Health Workers - led food hygiene intervention as a viable method to improve food hygiene practices in low-income urban areas in our latest publication https://journals.plos.org/water/article/authors?id=10.1371/journal.pwat.0000223
