Today, the RCOG has published an updated Green-top Guideline covering the recognition and management of sepsis in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods, including post-abortion sepsis.

Reducing maternal death from sepsis requires high levels of vigilance and to “Think Sepsis” at an early stage with any unwell, pregnant or recently pregnant woman.

Dr Geeta Kumar, Vice President for Clinical Quality said, ”Sepsis during and following pregnancy remains an important cause of maternal death globally, accounting for 11% of all maternal deaths. I’m pleased that the College has published an important update to this Green-top Guideline covering the recognition and management of sepsis in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods, including herpes simplex sepsis and post-abortion sepsis.

“We know from research published just last week by the Institute of Global Health Innovation that the gap between the UK and the best performing countries for deaths from treatable causes like sepsis had widened. This guideline provides systematically developed recommendations for healthcare professionals who care for women, non-binary and trans people suspected of, or diagnosed with, sepsis in primary or secondary healthcare.”
