Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) also known as Sexually Transmitted Infection or Venereal Diseases (VD) is acquired through s*xual contact regardless of your marital status or s*xual orientation.
Symptoms of STDs can vary from being asymptomatic, vague symptoms to exhibiting mild/moderate/severe symptoms after an exposure to an infected partner.
Chances are if you have engaged in unprotected s*x particularly with new partner(s), risk of STDs is much higher and thus regular testing in encouraged.
