🌏 Honouring Indigenous Voices

On this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate Pheap Sochea—the first Indigenous Cambodian to receive an Australia Awards Scholarship—who arrived in Western Australia earlier this year to begin his Master of Development Studies at Murdoch University.

Since settling in, Sochea has enjoyed exploring Perth, meeting new people, and connecting with Murdoch’s Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre to learn more about Australia’s Indigenous history and culture. His journey is inspiring other Indigenous candidates to chase their own dreams.

Happy International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples! 🎉

🎓 Returning for Cambodia’s Development 🇰🇭👨🏻‍🎓 🇦🇺✨

I’m very proud of how far I’ve come, deeply grateful for the support I’ve received, and hopeful for what lies ahead.

Living and studying with a vision impairment hasn’t always been easy, but this journey has helped me grow — not only as a student, but also as an advocate, a teacher, and a human being. My challenges have become my sources of strength.

A defining moment during my studies was participating in the Mindful Inquiry Intensive — a space where I felt truly safe to speak openly about my experiences with disability and reconnect with my purpose. It reminded me that healing and learning can happen side by side.

With a Master’s in Inclusive and Specialised Education, I’m returning home with greater confidence, new perspectives, and a renewed commitment to inclusive education and social justice.

This isn’t just a career path — it’s a personal mission rooted in my own lived experience and my vision for a more inclusive future.

I’m very much looking forward to reuniting with family and friends, enjoying my mother’s cooking, and finding a role that allows me to advocate for students with vision impairment and create more accessible learning environments in Cambodia.

Cambodian Research Highlighted at Australasian Epidemiology Conference

Congratulations to Sophanit Pen, an Australia Awards Cambodia scholar, for presenting his research at the Australasian Epidemiological Association Annual Scientific Meeting 2025, held in Hobart, Tasmania, from 16–18 July under the theme “Embracing Change: Epidemiological Methods for the Future.”

Sophanit delivered a poster presentation on “Problems in Accessing Healthcare and Associated Factors among Cambodian Reproductive-Aged Women.” His study explores barriers faced by women aged 15–49 in Cambodia using data from the Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey (CDHS).

“It was an exciting opportunity to share my findings with researchers interested in health equity and secondary data analysis in low- and middle-income countries,” Sophanit said.

He also joined plenary sessions on real-time surveillance, big data, women’s and children’s health, and modernizing epidemiologic cohorts, where he connected with Australian experts on infectious disease surveillance.

“The conference reaffirmed Australia’s strong commitment to public health, innovation, and inclusive research collaboration. I was inspired by the openness of researchers and their willingness to work across borders—including with Cambodia.”

👏 Well done, Sophanit, for representing Cambodia and contributing to global public health dialogue!

🎓 Returning for Cambodia’s Development 🇰🇭👨🏻‍🎓 🇦🇺✨

I feel proud and grateful for the journey as an Australia Awards scholar. The support, from pre-departure training to the on-award enrichment program, helped me grow academically and personally. I return to Cambodia with confidence, a global perspective, and a strong commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s leadership.

A standout moment was joining a video podcast with Professor Hugh White, hosted by the Australian Institute of International Affairs. Engaging with such a respected figure affirmed my voice as an advocate. Receiving a surprise certificate of appreciation from AIIA reminded me that my contributions matter—and that people are listening.

Australia became a second home. I’ll miss the safety, clean environment, fresh food, and how people respect nature and diversity. Most of all, I’m grateful for the supportive community and visa conditions that helped us build a meaningful life.

Now, I look forward to reuniting with my family in our fishing village and sharing a home-cooked meal. I’m ready to give back, using what I’ve learned to support Cambodia’s development, especially through inclusive policymaking and empowering young women leaders.

🎓 Returning for Cambodia’s Development 🇰🇭👨🏻‍🎓 🇦🇺✨

My one-year experience in Australia stands as one of the most transformative chapters of my life. My Australia Awards Scholarship has allowed me to broaden my network, cultivate meaningful friendships, develop academic and creative skills, rekindle my love for photography and audio, and unlock a new passion along the way.

One unforgettable moment was experiencing vivid Sydney on my first day in Australia. The city came alive with vibrant light installations, interactive art, and breathtaking projection mapping. This encounter sparked a creative inspiration that encouraged me to enroll in a unit I had initially been hesitant to pursue. By the end of the semester, I produced my first audiovisual project, blending the soundscapes of Australia and Cambodia—an experience that was both challenging and deeply rewarding.

I’ll miss my beautiful campus, the breeze of clean air, and the colourful spring when everything revealed its beauty. It made me pause to appreciate nature, a daily ritual I didn’t realise I had come to cherish. I won’t forget the summer when I go swimming in different bays, walking along coastlines, watching sunsets in Barangaroo, and visiting fellow scholars in other states. Each season has filled both my camera roll and soul.

As I prepare to return home, I’m looking forward to hugging my niece, sharing meals and travels with my family, strolling along the walking street of Phnom Penh city, and reconnecting with friends. I’m excited to contribute the skills and knowledge I’ve gained and bridge the art and creativity to other development sectors.

Celebrating Scholarly Impact on a Global Stage!

A big congratulations to Naven Hon, an Australia Awards Cambodia scholar and PhD student at the Australian National University, for presenting his research at the International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB) 2025 held in Brisbane this June!

Naven shared insights from his PhD research on the cultural significance of wild food plants in northeastern Cambodia—exploring how these plants support the well-being, food diversity, and livelihoods of local communities in forested and agricultural landscapes.

His presentation contributed to the congress’s powerful theme: “How People and Nature Need to Thrive Together.” Naven highlighted that preserving forests is not only a conservation priority but also a nature-based solution that directly benefits communities.

“I was proud to show how protecting biodiversity can also support rural livelihoods. My research sparked important questions on sustainable harvesting and food security,” he reflected.

👏 Well done, Naven, for making Cambodia’s voice heard in the global conservation conversation!
