Can a Chiropractor Fix Forward Head Posture?

What Is Forward Head Posture?

You’re sitting at your desk, looking down at your phone or computer for hours. Without realizing it, your head inches forward. This repeated motion, day after day, will leave you with a specific type of poor posture, where your head sticks out in front of your body. That’s what we call “forward head posture.”

While forward head posture might seem trivial, it will lead to a domino effect of not-so-fun side effects:

- Pain in the neck and upper back
- Tension headaches
- Muscle overstretching and tightness: when muscles are unhappy, they cause pain, soreness, and fatigue.

Forward head posture is a common alignment issue, but the encouraging news is that chiropractic care offers a whole toolbox of methods to help you :

1/ Spinal manipulation : this is what many patients think of when they hear “chiropractic adjustment.” It’s where a chiropractor uses their hands or an instrument to apply controlled force to a spinal joint. The goal is to improve the movement and position of your spine, thus helping pull your head back into a more natural position.

2/ Posture correction exercises for your neck and back. A chiropractor will show you specific exercises to strengthen all the weak muscles and stretch out the tight ones.

What if my child has scoliosis?

🔺What is Scoliosis?

A normal spine has three main curves: cervical lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and lumbar lordosis. These curves occur in the frontal plane, meaning they curve front to back. A scoliotic curve curves to the side.

A small scoliotic curve may be barely noticeable by eye, or it might be so slight that an X-ray (or MRI) would be needed to measure it.

It can lead to headaches and back pain, loss of normal range of motion, digestive issues, affect breathing, and eventually cause early arthritis due to the unusual pressure on some of the joints, etc.

🔺What can chiropractic do about my child’s scoliosis?

In mild cases, treatment is preventative:

- Postural correction and education
- Postural exercises to correct muscle imbalances that have developed due to the scoliosis
- Manual therapy (soft tissue release, joint mobilizations) to help improve flexibility and restore range of motion that have been impacted by the scoliosis

In moderate cases, treatment also helps to eventually wean off bracing while managing any associated symptoms.

In severe cases, chiropractic might be helpful post-operatively to correct the muscle imbalances that had developed pre-operatively.

CHIROPRATIC FOR FLAT HEAD SYNDROME

🔹What are flat spots ?

Flat spots, known as Plagiocephaly or flat head syndrome, is a condition where a baby develops a misshapen area on the head. Plagiocephaly can be present at birth due to positioning in the womb, or it can be acquired over time through environmental factors like extended time in one position. Babies' heads are soft, and as such, can change shape due to prolonged pressures being applied to them. Plagiocephaly can range in severity and may not always be immediately identifiable. Watch out for a head-turning preference, misalignment to the ears, or flattening to the back of the head, as these can all be indicators for plagiocephaly.

3 Signs of Plagiocephaly:

1. Head turning preference
2. Misalignment to ears.
3. Asymmetrical facial features

🔹What Causes Plagiocephaly?

Plagiocephaly can be caused by many factors, including several outside parents' control. Torticollis and premature birth can increase the risk of plagiocephaly developing after birth. Further factors such as back sleeping and extended use of car seats and convenience devices can encourage flat spots to form as well.

🔹How to Prevent Plagiocephaly?

Prevention and treatment are important to address plagiocephaly and there are many prevention strategies you can incorporate into your daily routine. For instance, encouraging your baby to spend more time awake on their tummy strengthens their neck, trunk and shoulder muscles and means less time lying on their back.

It’s important to address plagiocephaly early to ensure it can be properly corrected. Treating flat spots early, in the rapid growth window between 4 and 6 months of age, allows for higher chances of successful treatment.
