π¦ πΆ RSV Awareness: Protecting Your Child This Rainy Season
Introducing Our Pediatric Experts at Raffles Medical Cambodia
As the rainy season approaches in Cambodia (June to November), so does the heightened risk of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) β a highly contagious virus that affects the respiratory system, particularly in children under 6 years old.
RSV is one of the most common causes of respiratory infections in young children, especially those in group settings like kindergartens. While it may resemble a mild cold in older children or adults, RSV can lead to serious lower respiratory complications such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia in infants and toddlers.
π§οΈ During this high-risk season, other viruses like Influenza, Parainfluenza, and Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease also become more prevalent β making respiratory health a top concern for parents across Cambodia.
π¨ Why Lung and Respiratory Health Matters for Children
At Raffles Medical, we believe that healthy lungs are the foundation of a childβs overall well-being. Our team is here to support families in preventing, detecting, and managing respiratory illnesses like RSV during this vulnerable time of year.

Weβre proud to introduce our experienced pediatric specialists:
β’ Dr. Yagi, Pediatrician at Raffles Medical Phnom Penh
They bring compassionate care and deep expertise in pediatric respiratory conditions to help your child breathe easier this season β and beyond.
π What Are the Symptoms of RSV?
RSV can affect both the upper (nose, throat) and lower (bronchi, lungs) respiratory tract. Watch for:
β’ Fever
β’ Clear nasal discharge that thickens
β’ Persistent cough, sometimes leading to vomiting
β’ Wheezing or labored breathing (a sign of lower respiratory tract involvement)
β’ Apnea and respiratory failure in particularly infants.
π₯ How is RSV Treated?
There is no specific cure for RSV. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing complications:
β’ Hydration (oral or IV fluids)
β’ Nebulized bronchodilators to open airways
β’ Medications to reduce mucus
β’ Antibiotics (only if a secondary bacterial infection is present)
Mild cases may be managed at home, while severe symptoms or high-risk factors may require hospital care.
π‘οΈ How Can You Prevent RSV?
Protecting your child from RSV involves proactive steps:
β’ Encourage frequent handwashing
β’ Keep unwell children at home to avoid spreading the virus
β’ Avoid crowded indoor spaces
π§ Looking to the Future: Hope for RSV Vaccines
While there is currently no RSV vaccine for children available in Cambodia, we remain hopeful that effective pediatric vaccines will be introduced in the near future. In the meantime, early diagnosis and good hygiene are your best tools for protection.
