Cambodia has serious shortage of trained health care workers, especially for pediatric care. Did you know there are only 0.24 practicing physiotherapists per 10,000 people in Cambodia (2023)? There are no formal courses for speech and occupational therapy, and just one degree program for social work.
If we want a brighter future for Cambodian children, we need more students choosing health care for children. That’s why Safe Haven took part in the Prasat Bakong High School Career Fair — to inspire the next generation to join these crucial health professions and make a difference in the lives of children with disabilities and medical challenges — so every child can access the care they deserve.

Every month, our amazing Nurse Team prepares over 20kg of RUTF to support the families we serve.
But what is RUTF, you ask?�RUTF stands for Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food – a powerful, peanut-butter-based mixture packed with all the energy and nutrients our clients need. Made from peanut butter, oil, sugar, and milk powder, it's easy to store, doesn’t need refrigeration, and can be life-saving for children suffering from malnutrition.
👉 RUTF is used in addition to a child’s normal diet, giving them the extra nutritional boost they need to recover and grow stronger.
Until recently, our team was hand-mixing small batches using whisks (sometimes even attached to drills!) – a process that was both time-consuming and muscle-burning! 💪😅
Thanks to a generous donor, we were able to purchase a commercial mixer! Now, we can produce larger quantities in less time, allowing our team to focus more energy on what they do best — supporting our clients.

It costs just $120 each month to make this life-changing food for our clients.

This past weekend, we said goodbye to a cherished Board Member and passionate advocate of our Safe Haven Team.

Born with severe cerebral palsy and profound deafness, Caroline overcame immense challenges with extraordinary spirit. Her brilliance shone through her mastery of multiple spoken and signed languages, and her unrelenting pursuit of knowledge led her to degrees from Mount Holyoke and Simmons College, including two masters.

Caroline’s contributions as a scholar and educator were remarkable—from her published research on Etruscan artifacts to her beloved courses at UMass Amherst in Roman archaeology and religion. Her kindness, humor, and wisdom left a lasting impression on students and colleagues alike.

At Safe Haven, her leadership and deep commitment to children with disabilities transformed lives. She championed professional development for our clinical staff and personally funded scholarships, like the one our office manager Bopha received:

“I've never met her or was able to say my full appreciation for receiving this scholarship. But I will remember this educational support and her throughout my life.”

This small space cannot even begin to capture the fullness of Caroline’s life, her spirit, or the profound impact she has on those who knew her. She will forever be missed.

🌱 Helping Parents for a Better Future 🌱
✨ Exciting News! ✨
We just started our first Positive Parenting group for 2025! To kick things off, we played games to help everyone feel comfortable and get to know each other. Together, the group also created guidelines for the workshops, ensuring that every participant feels safe, heard, and welcome.
We believe strong families create strong communities. That’s why we teach parents and caregivers important skills in first aid, safe medicine use, physiotherapy, nutrition, child protection, and positive parenting through group and individual lessons.
One of our key programs is Positive Parenting, an 8-week workshop led by our trained staff. Many families face challenges in keeping their children safe and healthy, and this program gives them a space to learn, share, and support each other.
💡 What Parents and Caregivers Learn:

✅ The roles and responsibilities of parents
✅ How children grow and behave at different ages
✅ Setting short-term & long-term goals for children’s future
✅ Different parenting styles & their effects on children

💛 This program is open to both our caregivers and families in the community! We believe all parents and caregivers should have access to parenting support. By learning together, families can build friendships, share ideas, and create a safer and more supportive environment for children.
To help parents fully focus and participate, we provide childcare during each session. This allows them to relax, engage in discussions, and gain valuable skills without distraction.
