Ta Reach and Local Belief

Ta Reach is an eight-armed statue located in the western entrance gallery of Angkor Wat. Local communities believe it holds protective power, particularly over the western gate. In addition, three other ancestral spirits (Neak Ta) are believed to guard the remaining gates: Neak Ta Lokta Lerk (North), Neak Ta Kok Kou (East), and Neak Ta Pich (South), though they are not represented by physical images.

The name “Ta Reach” was given by local people, inspired by the statue’s eight arms. Some scholars suggest it may represent Vishnu and was originally placed in the central tower (Bakan). However, historical photographs show the statue already positioned at its current location without signs of relocation.

In 1949, French researchers temporarily removed the statue to study its base. During the 1980s, its head was stolen but later recovered. In 1993, it was transferred to the Royal Palace and subsequently to the National Museum of Cambodia. In 2004, the head was reattached, along with three newly reconstructed sandstone arms.

Royal Residence & Independence Gardens

The Royal Crusade for Independence Gardens—commonly known as the Royal Gardens—form a historic and scenic landmark at the heart of the city. Located opposite the Royal Residence (not open to the public), this area holds significant historical value. In the 1950s, King Sihanouk and General Lon Nol are said to have discussed and shaped Cambodia’s path to independence from French colonial rule here.

From the gardens, they would have overlooked one of the largest colonial-era hotels of the time, reflecting the architectural influence that surrounded them. Today, the gardens have transformed into a vibrant public space, popular with both locals and visitors.

The park offers a relaxing environment with landscaped greenery, a pagoda, shrines, statues and riverside views. Visitors can also enjoy casual exercise sessions, observe local wildlife such as bats, or unwind at the café. With its blend of history and leisure, the Royal Gardens provide an ideal setting to spend a few peaceful hours.

Baset Temple

Baset Temple was constructed during the reign of Suryavarman I in the early 11th century. Located on a hill in Ba Set Village, Ta Pun Commune, Sangkae district, Battambang province, Cambodia approximately 15 kilometers from the provincial center, the temple reflects classic Khmer architectural design from the period, with construction dated between 1036 and 1042.

Adjacent to the temple lies a remarkable reservoir measuring about 20 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 10 meters deep. Notably, this pond retains water throughout the year, remaining full even during the dry season, while rising further during the rainy months.
