Phnom Krom
Phnom Krom, rising 140 meters above the Tonle Sap Lake and located about 12 kilometers southwest of Siem Reap, welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. After closing time, guests are granted a 30-minute grace period to leave the temple grounds.
Built by King Yasovarman I (889–910 AD), Phnom Krom was dedicated to the Hindu trinity—Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The temple stands atop a natural hill and dates back to the late 9th to early 10th centuries. It features a rectangular layout with three sandstone towers aligned north to south on a single platform. The central tower honors Shiva, the northern tower Vishnu, and the southern Brahma.
Though time has worn down much of its structure—the towers’ tops have collapsed and the outer walls show heavy erosion—the temple’s laterite enclosure (50m x 50m) and four gate entrances remain visible. Additional ruins include three laterite halls, four stupas on the eastern side, and two brick libraries flanking a central sandstone one. Despite its weathered state, Phnom Krom continues to offer a glimpse into Cambodia’s profound spiritual and architectural heritage.
