Prasat Kravan Temple,
constructed in the early 10th century, stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of the era, with its dedication of a Vishnu statue on December 12, 921, marking a significant moment in its history. Commissioned by a royal court dignitary, this temple is distinguished within the Angkor Archaeological Park by its brick towers, each housing interior bas-reliefs of exceptional detail and artistry.
What sets Prasat Kravan apart is the rare use of brick as a medium for intricate bas-relief carvings, a remarkable feature not commonly found within the Angkor complex. The temple is also notable for housing a unique depiction of Vishnu, portrayed with eight arms, a striking representation known as the "Protector of the Three Worlds." This distinctive image further enhances the temple’s significance, cementing Prasat Kravan’s place as an extraordinary example of Khmer architectural and artistic achievement.

Tonle Sap Lake expands dramatically, becoming the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. The flooded mangrove forest near Kompong Phluk is especially beautiful to explore with love one by boat, offering a peaceful and scenic experience.
Before the end of the 9th century, King Yashovarman I relocated the Khmer capital from Hariharalaya (Roluos) to Yashodharapura (present-day Angkor), selecting the 60-meter-high hill of Bakheng as its spiritual and geographic center. Known in Khmer as Vnam Kandal ("Central Mountain"), Phnom Bakheng became a symbol of cosmic order and royal power.
Atop the hill, a stepped pyramid was constructed with five tiers and a central sanctuary that once enshrined a linga, representing divine kingship. Unlike other Angkorian temples, Bakheng was built directly onto bedrock rather than over compacted sand. Scholars have since discovered that the placement of its towers reflects the Indian cosmic calendar, further emphasizing its sacred significance.
During the 16th century, the site was revitalized and integrated into Theravada Buddhist practice. A massive seated Buddha was sculpted around the temple’s highest towers, transforming the space into a key pilgrimage destination—remnants of this image were still visible in the early 20th century.
An inscription from the Middle Period names the site ‘Bakheng,’ meaning ‘Virile,’ suggesting that the original Hindu symbolism of the linga endured in collective memory despite the Buddhist overlay. A notable Arabic inscription, left by Muslim pilgrims and later removed for preservation, further highlights Cambodia’s historical religious tolerance.
Phnom Bakheng stands as a testament to Angkor’s layered spiritual heritage and its enduring role as a sacred site for diverse faiths.
