Recently, Saros Hendrickson, Director of the Nevis Department of Gender Affairs and a Menstrual Health Educator, presented a locally made menstrual product dispenser to Mrs Tameshia Stanley, Guidance Counsellor at Jocelyn Liburd Primary School.

These dispensers were proudly made in Nevis by a local carpenter, who did a fantastic job 👏🏾. This is a great example of how addressing public health issues like menstrual health requires a whole-of-society approach.

Tackling menstrual health inequity takes collaboration, and this initiative is part of a collaborative effort between the Nevis Department of Gender Affairs, ACF, UNICEF Eastern Caribbean, and Lake Health & Wellbeing to ensure students have access to menstrual products during the school day. Initially, the dispensers will be stocked with Women’s Haven® products (thank you!).

Women’s Haven® is the first Caribbean-owned, 100% organic feminine care brand, offering a healthier and more environmentally friendly menstrual product option. We’re delighted to help make these products available right here in St. Kitts & Nevis.

A big thank you to everyone who made this initiative possible 💙

✨ Happy New Year! ✨

As we step into a new year, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what has been a truly wonderful year. It’s been busy, challenging at times, but above all deeply fulfilling and impactful. We’re incredibly proud of what we have been able to achieve this year through our main projects and programmes (You're Sweet Enough, Routes to Resilience, SKN NCD Alliance, Women's Health and Autism Research)

None of this would have been possible without the support, commitment and trust of so many people. A heartfelt thank you to our Board members, team, Youth Health Advocates, practicum students, volunteers, funders, partners, collaborators, and to everyone who attended our events, shared their stories, participated in our projects, and supported our campaigns. Your engagement and belief in this work make all the difference.

As we begin this new year, we encourage everyone to move into the year with kindness towards themselves, to prioritise their mental and physical health, and to take small, meaningful steps towards healthier lives.

Here’s to a year of continued collaboration, learning, advocacy and positive change. We look forward to what’s ahead and to continuing this journey 💚.

Wishing you all a healthy, peaceful and hopeful New Year.

At our recent Youth Health Policy Dialogue, Clilia Davis, Founder and Managing Director of iSTEAM The Academy of Arts and Sciences, encouraged young people to take a holistic approach to their health, nurturing their mental, physical, and social wellbeing.

From journalling and positive affirmations, to finding accountability partners and building positive relationships both online and offline, her message was clear: supportive environments and policies should empower young people to engage in healthy behaviours in everyday life.

Youth health is about caring for the whole person. Investing in holistic, youth-centred approaches is essential to improving youth health outcomes.

The NCD Alliance has put together a clear fact sheet showing how health taxes and subsidies can be used as effective public health tools. Health taxes and subsidies are tools governments can use to make healthier options more affordable and less healthy ones less appealing. For example, taxes on sugary drinks have been shown to reduce consumption, encourage reformulation, and support better health outcomes — especially for children and young people.

At the same time, subsidies can help lower the cost of healthier foods and essential services, making it easier for families to choose what’s better for their health. Used together, these approaches can help prevent noncommunicable diseases while supporting healthier communities.

This is one way policy can quietly shape healthier environments — without taking away choice.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent webinar, “An Introduction to NCDs and NCD Policies for Non-Medical Advocates.” It was wonderful to see such good engagement and interest in understanding how communities and advocates can play a role in addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Caribbean.

We are incredibly grateful to our speakers for sharing their time, expertise and practical insights:
🩺 Dr Kerry Mitchell, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Chair of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, St. George’s University
🦷 Ms Paula Jankowski and Ms Sarah Greenberg, Dental School Candidates at the University of Pennsylvania
📣 Ms Renee Thomas, MPH, Instructor and Public Health Advocate, St. George’s University

A very special thank you to our two moderators, Dr Samuel Greenberg and Dr Magdalena Jankowski, MPH candidates at St. George’s University. As practicum students, they did an excellent job organising the session and guiding the discussion so thoughtfully and professionally. 👏

If you weren’t able to join us live, you can still catch up. The recording, slides and additional resources are available on our website here: https://lakehealthandwellbeing.com/ncd-webinar-for-non-medical-advocates/

Thank you all for being part of this conversation as we continue working towards healthier, more resilient communities across the Caribbean.

🍽️ Ultra-processed foods are everywhere — but what do we actually know about them?
The Lancet, a well-respected global journal that looks closely at health and public health issues, recently explored how ultra-processed foods affect our bodies and long-term health. To make the research easier to digest, they’ve put together a simple infographic highlighting the key takeaways.

With ultra-processed foods now a big part of everyday diets, this is a helpful resource for understanding why what we eat matters — and how small changes can support better health over time.
