Menstrual Hygiene Day is on 28th May, and the theme is "Together for a period-friendly world.โ€ ๐Ÿ’—

One of the most important ways we can create a period-friendly world is by ensuring that everyone has access to accurate, age-appropriate menstrual health education. Weโ€™re proud to be doing our part through our Menstrual Health Education Programme, in collaboration with the Nevis Department of Gender Affairs and the Advancement of Children Foundation.

Last month, Saros Hendrickson, Menstrual Health Educator and Director of Department of Gender Affairs - Nevis, led engaging menstrual health education sessions with students at Charlestown Primary School and Violet Jeffers Nicholls Primary School.

A big thank you to the students for their enthusiastic participation, and to the guidance counsellors and principals for their warm welcome and support.

As part of this initiative, the schools also received a donation of Womenโ€™s Haven 100% organic menstrual products, helping to ensure that students not only have knowledge, but also access to essential products.

Through this work, we aim to address stigma, build confidence, and create a more supportive and period-friendly world for all.

It was a pleasure to attend this morningโ€™s Menstrual Hygiene Day Virtual Partnersโ€™ Meeting alongside the Department of Gender Affairs - Nevis

Hosted by WASH United , the meeting brought together organisations from around the world, all working towards a shared goal: creating a more period-friendly world through impactful menstrual health and hygiene initiatives.

We were especially happy to see the presentation from Tanya Ambrose, Founder and CEO of Scrub Life Cares , who highlighted the excellent work theyโ€™re doing just across the waters in Antigua and Barbuda.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is on the 28th May, and the theme is โ€œTogether for a period-friendly worldโ€ and weโ€™re excited to be part of the global movement.

Stay tuned for updates on our local activities in partnership with the Nevis Department of Gender Affairs and others.

Over the past few months, weโ€™ve had the pleasure of working with a talented group of practicum students , and we are proud to showcase their important contributions to public health research. Today, we are highlighting Alyn Wakefield from St. Georgeโ€™s University, whose practicum project explores how a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax could support the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA) while improving health outcomes and environmental sustainability in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Alynโ€™s work demonstrates that implementing an SSB tax could encourage healthier dietary choices, reduce the use of single-use plastics, and generate revenue to fund programs that strengthen schools, promote physical activity, support local food initiatives, and improve recycling efforts. Her research also draws on lessons from Barbados, showing how taxation can effectively shift consumer behavior and reduce non-communicable disease risks over time.

We want to thank all our practicum students for their dedication and curiosity, and Alyn for her insightful and well-researched article.
