Patients in or post COVID-19 infection

Study title:
1. COVID-19 cardiac injury: Implications for long-term surveillance and outcomes in survivors
2. COVID-19 and cardiac arrhythmias: A global perspective on arrhythmia characteristics and management strategies

Findings:
- It is recommended to take an ECG or other types of cardiac monitoring in the recovery phase to check abnormality in post COVID-19 infection
- Atrial fibrillation was the most commonly reported tachyarrhythmia whereas severe sinus bradycardia and complete heart block were the most common bradyarrhythmias
- For identifying COVID-19 related arrhythmic risk or cardiac injury, Cardea SOLO can be a useful tool

Clinical benefits of long-term monitoring

When it comes to the clinical evidence of the effect of the long-term ECG monitoring, there have been a lot of clinical articles and papers that compare continuous ECG patch with a standard holter to evaluate the clinical efficacy and usability, and the results show much better outcomes in continuous ECG patch monitoring for diagnostic yield of arrhythmias

The clinical significance of perioperative AF in THA and TKA patients

Study title:
New-Onset Perioperative Atrial Fibrillation Is Associated with Increased All-Cause Mortality in Elderly Patients Undergoing Total Knee and Hip Replacements

Conclusion:
- One-year all-cause mortality in elderly patients undergoing TKA or THA is significantly increased in the patients that develop new postoperative AF
- These patients warrant increased clinical surveillance following surgery

How to diagnose AF and who needs opportunistic screening for AF?

According to the 2020 ESC guidelines,

AF should be diagnosed with
- Standard 12 lead ECG recording
- Single lead ECG tracing ≥ 30s

Opportunistic screening for AF is needed in
- Hypertensive patients
- Patients with OSA
- Patients ≥ 65 years of age

For more details, please check the ESC 2020 guidelines here: https://www.escardio.org/Guidelines/Clinical-Practice-Guidelines/Atrial-Fibrillation-Management

ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines aim to present all the relevant evidence to help physicians weigh the benefits and risks of a particular diagnostic or therapeutic procedure on Atrial Fibrillation. They should be essential in everyday clinical decision making.

New data published in the 'Journal of the American Heart Association' shows that patients who have ype 1 or type 2 diabetes and AFib are less likely to notice irregular heartbeat. The authors found that patients were about 25% less likely than people without diabetes to recognize common symptoms of Afib. Prakash Deedwania, immediate past chair of the American Heart Association Diabetes Committee, explains "keeping these new obsevations in mind, along with the serious consequences of failing to recognize AFib in time, it seems prudent to consider screening older patients with diabetes for AFib so that treatment may be initated when appropriate".

According to the published clinical study in the Journal of the American Heart Association, diabetic patients having atrial fibrillation less often perceive atrial fibrillation symptoms, although they have worse quality of life and more cardiac and neurological comorbidities than patients without diabetes.
This multicenter cohort study raises the question of whether patients with diabetes should be systematically screened for silent atrial fibrillation.

Atrial Flutter is closely related to Atrial Fibrillation. Common symptoms are rapid heartbeats, dizziness, shortness of breath, and tiredness.
Atrial Flutter develops a re-entry circuit within the atria' myocardium. It creates too much of electrical signals but still in a steady rhythm. When you have fast relatively regular heartbeats, don't lose the golden time.

Have you ever felt "irregular quick" heart beats? Do you also feel fatigue, dizziness, or shotness of breath? These can imply you might have atrial fibrillation. If it is AFib, it raises the chances for a stroke and other heart complications.

Especially, people who are older than 60 are more likely to get AFib than others. Our product, Cardea SOLO certified by FDA is one of the most innovative wearble ECG device.

Why early detection of AF is important?
Let's see AF-related major outcomes.

- 5 times increased stroke rate
- 1.5-3.5 folds increase of death
- LV dysfunction/HF in 20~30% of AF patients
- Impaired quality of life in > 60% of patients
