For more than ten years, Ms. Legshid Turtogtuck, an 84-year-old from Mongolia, has been receiving treatment at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital. Through years of surgeries and regular check-ups, she has remained healthy without any recurrence of cancer. “It feels like a dream to live without having my bladder removed. This is all thanks to Professor Ji Youl Lee and Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital,” her family shared with bright smiles, reflecting on their long journey.

The results of the study were published in the international journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy (IF 7.5) and earned the Best Basic Research Award at the Annual Meeting of the Korean Brain Tumor Society.

Professor Ahn’s study clearly demonstrated the synergistic effect of combining stem cell–based therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors. His team is now preparing to move into clinical trials, aiming to prevent recurrence and improve long-term survival outcomes.

In 2023, Batbold Bat-Erkhes, a boy from Mongolia, underwent his final heart surgery at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital. With his health restored, Bat-Erkhes returned to daily life.

Two years later, in the summer of 2025, while traveling in Korea with his family, he told his parents, “I really want to see my professor and say hello.” That wish brought him back to the hospital.

That day, the young patient and his family personally expressed their sincere gratitude to the medical team who had saved his life.

To Professor SooYoun Bae, Department of Breast Surgery, breast cancer surgery is not merely the removal of a tumor. As the breast is deeply tied to a woman’s sense of identity, preserving its form and appearance throughout surgery is essential.

Professor Bae is widely known for her surgical approach that minimizes scarring by carefully planning the incision location and orientation.

Some international patients have shared that their local physicians noted, “The surgical site is barely visible.”

Dear. Professor Jae-won Yoo (Department of Pediatrics)

Although our child underwent two bone marrow transplants for acute myeloid leukemia, traces of minimal residual disease remained even after the second transplant, and we endured a time of deep uncertainty. At that time, our child’s survival rate was said to be only 30%.

Professor Jae-won Yoo wasn’t our child’s attending physician, but she still checked on our child during rounds and offered us words of comfort:

“Survival rates are just numbers. If your child overcomes this, then for your child, the survival rate becomes 100% — and that’s all that matters.”

That simple yet powerful message, encouraging us not to lose hope, became a lifeline for our family during what felt like an endless period of despair. In the end, just as Professor Yoo had said, our child came remarkably close to full recovery — a result we can only describe as a miracle.

Even now, when we occasionally see Professor Yoo during outpatient visits to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, she attentively checks on our child’s condition and always encourages us with a warm and compassionate gaze.
We extend our deepest respect and heartfelt gratitude to Professor Yoo for the hope and care she continues to give us.

“The first flower of my life bloomed in 1999, but faded after seven years. Since then, I feared I might never see another blossom. But in 2025, another flower has bloomed in my life.”

Comparing her life to a flower, Ms. Kyung shared her sincere gratitude with everyone who made her second beginning possible. She never imagined this moment to come, yet here she is—holding her most cherished bloom tightly in her arms, saying with joy,

“I will treasure this beautiful flower for the rest of my days.”

The team discovered a positive feedback loop in which cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) surrounding HCC tumors stimulate one another through FAP and STAT3 signaling pathways, thereby promoting cancer progression.

Blocking this loop may suppress tumor growth and immune evasion, laying the foundation for future therapeutic approaches such as FAP-targeted CAR-T cell treatment. This research exemplifies the hospital’s commitment to uncovering disease mechanisms at the molecular level and translating them into viable treatment strategies.

The second award-winning study identified a novel mechanism in ALD, where accumulated IgA antibodies in the liver tissue of patients activate hepatic macrophages, triggering inflammation.

By blocking this IgA signaling pathway, it may be possible to reduce inflammation, offering new hope for patients resistant to conventional therapies. This mechanism could serve as a cornerstone for developing personalized immunotherapies for ALD.
