A research team led by Professor Sang-Wook Lee of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at AMC and Professor Jungyo Suh of the Department of Urology at AMC, has developed an AI model that diagnoses kidney diseases from CT scans while keeping patient data fully encrypted. 👨⚕️ 🌟

The AI model, built with the CKKS homomorphic encryption scheme, accurately classified kidney CT scans while keeping data fully encrypted. Despite larger file sizes and slower processing, GPU support allowed analysis within minutes, demonstrating secure and efficient medical image diagnosis. 💻🔒

Published in ‘Radiology: Artificial Intelligence’, the study highlights the potential of encrypted AI models to become the standard for privacy-preserving medical image analysis, ensuring both diagnostic accuracy and data security. 📊 🤖

Dr. Naim Sm Abuzarifa, a Palestinian surgeon with 15 years of experience in head and neck reconstruction, completed a one-year fellowship in the Department of Plastic Surgery at AMC. Recommended by his professor in Austria, he trained under Professor Tae Suk Oh from Department of Plastic Surgery at AMC, a world-renowned expert in facial reanimation, to refine his skills in advanced microsurgical reconstruction, including facial procedures and cleft surgery. 👨⚕️ 🌟

He was especially inspired by patients who regained natural smiles after complex surgery and impressed by Korea’s strong culture of health management, which motivated him to adopt healthier habits himself. 😊 🚶♂️

With only a handful of specialists in the Middle East able to perform advanced facial reconstruction, Dr. Abuzarifa is determined to share the surgical techniques he learned in Korea to expand treatment opportunities for patients in Palestine and the wider region. 💪 🩺

A research team led by Professor Hyery Kim from the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at AMC studied 212 pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients and found that tailoring chemotherapy intensity based on minimal residual disease (MRD) levels significantly improved outcomes. 👨⚕️📊🧬

Patients with high MRD levels who received intensified treatment had a four-fold higher five-year event-free survival rate than those on standard therapy, without added severe complications. With the introduction of next-generation sequencing–based MRD testing, which is over 100 times more sensitive than conventional methods, AMC’s cure rate for pediatric ALL has exceeded 97% since 2015. 📈✨

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of blood cancer in children. Advances in treatment have significantly improved survival rates, but in some cases, even when patients appear to be cured, a small number of cancer cells remain in the body, putting them at high risk of relapse....

The research team led by Professor Duk-Hyun Kang of the Division of Cardiology at Asan Medical Center and Professor Sung Ji Park of the Division of Cardiology at Samsung Medical Center conducted a 20-year follow-up of 1,063 patients with severe but asymptomatic mitral regurgitation. 👨⚕️🌟

The study found that early mitral valve repair reduced the risk of cardiac-related death by 82 percent and overall mortality by 34 percent compared with patients who delayed surgery until symptoms appeared. Early surgery also achieved higher success rates (97 percent vs. 84 percent), lower surgical mortality, fewer hospitalizations for heart failure, and less atrial fibrillation, showing benefits for both survival and quality of life. 🫀📊🔬

Mitral regurgitation is a condition in which the mitral valve, located between the left ventricle and left atrium of the heart, does not close properly, causing blood to flow back into the left atrium when the left ventricle contracts. A team led by Professors Dok Hyun Yoon, Hyungwoo Cho, and Jaewon Hyung from the Division of Oncology at AMC, has been selected for a national research project to evaluate AT101, a next generation CAR T therapy for patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who did not respond to existing CAR T treatment. 👨⚕️🔬

CAR T therapy, which engineers a patient’s T cells to target cancer cells, has improved survival rates for B cell lymphoma, but about 60 percent of patients still relapse or fail to respond. AT101, developed with human derived antibodies, binds more closely to cancer cells than mouse based antibodies, potentially enhancing therapeutic activity and maximizing anticancer effects. 🧪📈

Professor Dok Hyun Yoon expressed hope that AT101 will provide a new treatment strategy for patients with difficult to treat blood cancers. Since opening its CAR T Center in 2022, AMC has successfully performed over 100 CAR T treatments and is conducting clinical research on a wide range of cancers beyond DLBCL. 🩸

AMC ranked the world’s top 10 hospitals in six specialties in Newsweek’s 2026 evaluation as the highest number in Korea. AMC placed 4th in cancer, gastroenterology, and endocrinology, 6th in neurology and urology, and 8th in orthopedics. It also ranked No. 1 in Korea across six specialties, including cardiology and cardiac surgery. 👨⚕️🌟🏥🥇

The rankings, conducted with Statista, were based on a global survey of healthcare professionals, international accreditations, and the use of patient-reported outcome measures. AMC’s performance improved across multiple fields, and it was also ranked 25th worldwide in Newsweek’s overall hospital ranking earlier this year. 🌍📊

President Seung-Il Park of AMC emphasized that AMC has become a trusted global leader in treating serious illnesses and pledged to continue advancing its care system to ensure safety and high-quality medical services. ✨🙌

AMC has developed Korea’s first Acute Care for Elders Risk Score, which predicts risks such as delirium, falls, complications, and mortality in elderly inpatients on the first day of admission with 83.7 percent accuracy. 🏥👵👴

Developed using machine learning analysis of more than 21,000 patient records, the tool outperforms existing methods and is now embedded in the AMC’s medical information system, allowing physicians to deliver faster, more tailored care for high risk patients. 📊 🩺

The findings were published in the ‘Journal of the American Medical Directors Association’ (JAMDA), while AMC continues to expand elderly care services through its integrated program “WithONE.” ✍🏼 🫶

Professor Jee Ho Lee from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Asan Medical Center has published ‘Facial Bones and Human Stories’, a medical humanities book that explores human life and identity through facial bones. 👨⚕️ 📖

Drawing on over 20 years of experience reconstructing faces of oral cancer patients and accident victims, Professor Jee Ho Lee examines the meaning, function, and history of facial bones from a humanistic perspective. The book consists of three chapters covering the anatomy of facial bones, the elements that make them distinctly human, and their role in civilization. 💀 😊

Featuring the author’s own illustrations and webtoons, the book aims to help readers understand the social and cultural significance of facial bones and to view their own faces and lives from a new perspective. 📜 🌍

A large scale clinical study by AMC has shown that standard drug therapy is as safe and effective as personalized high intensity therapy for high risk patients undergoing complex coronary stenting. 👨⚕️ 🔬

The research team led by Professor Duk-Woo Park, Endowed-Chair Professor Seung-Jung Park, and Professor Do-Yoon Kang, along with Clinical Fellow Seong B**g Wee from the Division of Cardiology at AMC, analyzed outcomes in 2,018 patients. After one year, there was no significant difference between the two groups in major clinical events such as death, stroke, myocardial infarction, or revascularization, although bleeding risk was higher with personalized therapy. 🫀 📊

The findings were published in the European Heart Journal and presented at the Hot Line session of the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2025 in Madrid, which drew more than 45,000 participants. 🗣 📝
