🧬 The Metacell Story 🧬

Metacell is a cell-activation device developed in Spain.
During the procedure, we first draw a small amount of the patient’s blood and use centrifugation to obtain PRP (platelet-rich plasma). The PRP is then transferred into a dedicated German kit for Metacell. When the device is activated, it gradually exposes the PRP to specific wavelengths of light and controlled temperatures, activating the stem cells, autologous exosomes, and growth factors contained within the PRP.

These activated components can be administered via IV infusion for anti-aging purposes. However, the method we use more often at our clinic is as a skin booster—injecting it into the skin to help restore the skin barrier and improve the dermal environment.

The treatment became even more widely known after Kim Kardashian reportedly received it in Korea and was pleased with the results.

Because Metacell is a high-cost procedure, it’s difficult to describe it as ‘cost-effective’. That said, since stem-cell culture is restricted in Korean clinics, I believe Metacell is one of the safest and most effective options for maximizing the benefits of stem cell–related activity without culturing.

After becoming a board-certified plastic surgeon, my first workplace was a clinic well known for stem cell treatments. At that time, I had the opportunity to present and study together with the director at international conferences such as IFATS (International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science) and ISCT (International Society for Cell Therapy), focusing on psoriasis treatment and early scar improvement using adipose-derived stem cells. Going forward, based on the Metacell system, I plan to study more deeply and further develop reverse-aging/anti-aging treatments that aim to rejuvenate the body at the cellular level.

안녕하세요😀
멘드에 메타셀 장비가 도입된 이후,
자세한 소개를 드리지 못했음에도 불구하고
이번 1월 이벤트에 많은 관심을 보내주셔서 감사드립니다.

메타셀은 스페인에서 만들어진 세포 활성화 장비입니다.
시술시에는 환자분의 혈액을 채혈한 뒤 원심분리를 통해
PRP(혈소판풍부혈장) 를 먼저 획득합니다.
이후 메타셀 전용 독일제 키트로 PRP를 옮겨 장비를 구동하면,
특정 파장의 빛과 온도에 단계적으로 노출시켜 PRP 성분 안에 포함된 줄기세포, 자가 엑소좀과 성장인자들을 활성화시킵니다.

킴 카다시안이 한국에서 시술을 받고 만족했다는 이유로 알려지며
더 유명해진 시술이기도 한데요.

메타셀은 고가 시술인 만큼 ‘가성비가 좋다’고 말씀드리기는 어렵지만,
국내에서는 의원에서의 줄기세포 배양이 제한되어 있기 때문에
배양 없이 줄기세포의 역할을 최대한 안전하고 효과적으로 끌어내기에는
안전하고 효과적인 시술 중 하나라고 생각합니다.

저는 성형외과 전문의가 된 이후 처음 근무했던 병원이
줄기세포 시술로 유명한 곳이었고,
당시 대표원장님과 함께 IFATS(International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science), ISCT(International Society for Cell Therapy) 등 국제학회에서
지방유래줄기세포를 이용한 건선 질환 및 초기 흉터 개선 등에 대해
발표하고 공부했던 경험이 있습니다.

그동안은 연구실 등의 여건상 세포치료 분야를
충분히 이어가지 못했던 부분이 있었는데요,
앞으로는 메타셀 장비를 기반으로

💙 IOPE Advisory Workshop 💙

Last Thursday, I had a workshop with the Amorepacific IOPE team, where I serve as a medical advisor.

I gave a lecture on recent trends in lifting procedures, the mechanisms and effectiveness of at-home beauty devices currently on the market, and the clinical role of PDRN.
Afterward, we had a Q&A session, and I was happy to answer a wide range of questions—from facial aging to the procedures preferred by international patients.

IOPE is a brand built on extensive research data and technological expertise, so I’m truly proud to be involved as an advisor. Perhaps because of that strong brand philosophy, the team listened so attentively and asked such thoughtful, passionate questions—thank you.

👩🏻‍⚕️ 지방성형줄기세포연구회 심포지움 발표 👩🏻‍⚕️

지난 10월 19일, 서울성모병원에서 열린 지방성형줄기세포연구회 심포지엄에서 ‘Laser and EBD Prejuvenation’ 을 주제로 발표했습니다.

Prejuvenation은 ‘Pre’와 ‘Rejuvenation’의 합성어로, 노화가 본격화되기 전에 미리 대비해 노화의 속도를 늦추는 전략을 의미합니다. 최근에는 시술 시작 연령이 낮아지면서 장기적인 안티에이징 계획의 중요성이 커지고 있습니다.

성형외과 의사로서 비침습적 시술을 시행할 때에도, 향후 수술적 치료 가능성까지 고려한 치료 전략을 세우는 것은 큰 장점이 됩니다. 많은 선후배 성형외과 선생님들 앞에서 저의 견해를 공유할 수 있어 영광이었습니다. 감사합니다.

👩🏻‍⚕️ Presentation at the KSLSS symposium 👩🏻‍⚕️

On October 19, I delivered a talk titled ‘Laser and EBD Prejuvenation’ at the Korean Society of Lipoplastic Surgery and Adipose Derived Stem Cells Symposium held at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital.

Prejuvenation is a coined term combining ‘pre-‘ and ‘rejuvenation’ which refers to proactively preventing aging and slowing its progression before it truly begins.

As patients begin treatments at younger ages, long-term antiaging planning has become increasingly important. As a plastic surgeon, even when performing noninvasive procedures, it is advantageous to design treatment plans with potential future surgical interventions in mind. It was an honor to share my perspectives with many senior and junior colleagues in plastic surgery. Thank you.

We’re excited to share that MEND’s Ulthera has been upgraded to Ultherapy Prime—sorry this news is a bit late! You can now experience Ultherapy Prime at Mend clinic.

The biggest difference from the previous Ulthera system is the improved resolution of the ultrasound imaging. Some people ask whether that only benefits the practitioner, not the patient. The technology doesn’t distinguish tissue layers by type—it deposits energy at specific, preset depths like 4.5/3.0/1.5 mm. To avoid side effects like hollowing or volume loss in the cheeks, it’s crucial to see exactly which layer is receiving the thermal coagulation points during treatment. So better imaging ultimately translates into safer, more precise treatments and better outcomes for patients.

Pain level and treatment time are not dramatically different from the previous model. While shorter treatment times might sound convenient, concentrating heat too quickly can increase the risk of burns and similar side effects—so we don’t see aggressive time reduction as a real advantage for now.

Last weekend, I also attended a “Train the Trainer” seminar exclusively for physicians who lecture on Ultherapy Prime. It was the first TTT session hosted by Merz since the Prime launch, and I’m scheduled to give an internal Merz lecture next year as well.

We’ll keep striving for better results with newest devices and the latest knowledge. Thank you.

🪄 울쎄라피 프라임 런칭 🪄

멘드의 울쎄라가 울쎄라피 프라임으로 업그레이드 되었는데 소개가 늦었습니다!
이제 멘드에서도 울쎄라피 프라임을 만나보실 수 있습니다.

울쎄라피 프라임과 기존 울쎄라의 가장 큰 차이는 초음파 화면의 해상도가 개선되었다는 점입니다.
이건 시술하는 사람에게 장점이지 시술 받는 사람에겐 장점이 아니지 않냐고도 많이 질문하시는데요.
울쎄라를 포함하는 초음파 리프팅 장비들은 조직을 구분하는 것이 아니라 카트리지가 타겟으로 하는 특정한 깊이(예를 들면 4.5mm, 3.0mm, 1.5mm)에 작용하게 됩니다.

그러므로 가장 많이 걱정하시는 볼패임, 볼꺼짐 등의 부작용을 피하려면 어느 층에 열응고점이 맺히는지 정확히 보면서 시술하는 것이 중요하므로, 결과적으로는 환자분들께도 많은 도움으로 이어지는 발전이라고 생각합니다.

시술시 통증이나 시술 시간 면에서 기존 모델과 많은 차이가 있지는 않습니다. 그러나 시술 시간이 짧아지면 열에너지가 짧은 시간에 축적되면서 오히려 화상과 같은 부작용을 나타낼 수도 있기 때문에 그 부분은 아쉽지만 받아들여야 할 것 같습니다.

지난 주말에는 울쎄라피 프라임에 대해 학회에서 강의하는 의사들만 모아서 트레이닝하는 ‘Train the trainer’ 세미나에도 다녀왔습니다. 울쎄라피 프라임이 런칭한 이후 모회사인 멀츠에서 처음 시행하는 TTT 세션이었는데요. 내년에는 저의 멀츠 사내 강의도 계획되어 있습니다.
