AMPUTATION

Amputation is a removal of body parts, commonly amputated parts are the upper and lower limbs. As a result of Trauma and in some cases due to Diabetes Complication/Infection. After having a hip/knee replacement surgery, your Orthopedic Doctor will prescribe you to undergo Physical Rehabilitation and refer you to a Physical Therapist (PT). It is essential to start the Therapy right after surgery to prevent complications. PT’s will provide home services for your convenience. They will prescribe some exercises that will help you improve your range of motion to promote fast and effective recovery.

Rehab will help you:
1. Restore normal movement in your joint
2. Build up strength in the surrounding muscles around the joint
3. Ease pain and swelling
4. Let you get back to your near normal/normal activities
5. Help with circulation, particularly right after surgery to prevent blood clots

Typically, fractured bones will heal within six weeks depending on the type of fracture location. During the time in splint or cast, loss of muscle strength in the injured area is likely. It is necessary to seek Physiotherapist to prevent post-fracture stiffness and weakness in the adjacent joints and muscles during the first six weeks while your fracture is healing. If not treated immediately after the surgery, the affected area might have muscle contractures and in some cases severe deformity. The physiotherapist will advice several exercises for “passive range-of-motion”. Patients can begin to exercise without weights such as “isometric exercises” for muscle strengthening. Once the bone has well healed, they may use weights and resistance theraband as prescribed. For inquiries call 6965 0805.
